2: Why should schools provide inclusive education for student receiving special education services?

3: "First of all, because it is required by law that we have children in inclusion as much as possible instead of pulling them out for services. Also it helps the students feel like part of the class instead of being set apart from their peers. They are hearing the instruction that the class is hearing." - Mrs. Landreth

4: Teachers? Students? Parents? | "All of the students if it is done right." - Mrs. Landreth | Who benefits from inclusion?

5: "Everyone benefits from inclusion. Teachers get more experience working with the lower students. The student with a disability benefits because they are getting the core curriculum with support. The resource room benefits because more than one student with a disability can be included in a classroom at one time. The other students within the class benefit because they get a chance to learn how to interact with all ability levels." - Mrs. Coulter

6: What about non-disabled students? Will they still receive the same quality of education if special education students are included in their classroom?

7: "Yes! | In fact, they may actually receive better instruction since the teacher will be practiced at modifying classroom curriculum. All instruction should be differentiated because ALL students are on different levels." - Mrs. Coulter

8: What about behavior problems and disruptions in the classroom? | "It's important to remember all students may have discipline problems. Not just special education students! The classroom rules should be followed by all students. " - Mrs. Coulter

9: "If the child can be deescalated in the classroom, there is no reason to remove the child. If the child continues with disruptive behavior, it is appropriate to remove the child to the resource room or another designated area. If this is a physical aggression, the child should be removed from the classroom, or it may be easier and safer to remove the class." - Mrs. Landreth

10: What is the role of the classroom teacher in the inclusion model? | Team Work!

11: "The teacher is to work together with the sped teacher to modify work for the sped students and to do everything they can to include the sped students in the learning of everyone. " _ Mrs. Landreth

12: What is the role of the special education teacher in the inclusion model?

13: The sped teacher is to determine if the student is able to do the work the other students are doing and to work with the teacher to modify the work. The sped teacher is responsible to make sure there is a para or teacher in the regular ed classroom to assist the student." -Mrs. Landreth

14: "That depends on the teachers. Some regular ed teachers can easily modify curriculum but other times they need the assistance of the sped teacher. I think communication is very important between the teachers." - Mrs. Landreth

15: Whose job is it to modify and adapt the classroom curriculum for special education students?

16: Do "included" students take the same tests as other students in the classroom?

17: It depends on the student. If prepared well enough, some students are able to take the same tests, but if their work is modified and it is inappropriate, they should not take the same tests. - Mrs. Landreth

18: Conclusions about Inclusion...

19: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) '97 mandates that children must be educated in the "least restrictive environment". When appropriate education can be provided, the least restrictive environment is the general education classroom. Special education should not be considered a "separate place." Rather, if we embrace the inclusion model of special education, we will be better able to meet the needs of ALL students in the classroom through differentiated instruction, modifications and accommodations.
