FC: ISSUES IN THE TEENAGE WORLD | By: AnQi Long
Life | 1. The Future 2. Suicide & Depression 3. Relationship 2. Fitting In 3. Addiction | Being a teenager is not easy. Trying to survive as one is even harder.
Even so, what can I possibly do? What can I do to change this tiny box-garden reality? I haven't even lived half of my life; Rebelling against, and embracing others-- There experiences are being tattooed unto my subconscious. When I was standing on the edge of a cliff, "Adversity" grabbed my arm, And for the first time, I could see where I was. Towards a wider field; towards somewhere deeper, larger . . . I'm just heading towards a world which I can\t even imagine. Tell me, what is the definition of 'strength'? Does it mean to hurt yourself, Or perhaps to throw yourself away to protect someone precious? The gazelles in the savanna raise clouds of dust; They have no choice but to remain standing in the wind, till the day they die. Humans keep walking onward, In order to keep on living. They proceed, while still decoding an incomplete piece of data. It looks like I've already walked out of the desert of my beginnings, alone. I want to remain as myself till the day I turn to ash. Where did I come from, long ago? Where will I go, in the far future? Being thrown around without knowing; time will come to an end before I realize it. It looks like I've already walked out of the desert of my beginnings, alone. I want to remain as myself till the day I turn to ash. When I was standing on the edge of a cliff, "Adversity grabbed my arm, And for the first time, I could see where I was. Towards a wider field; towards somewhere deeper, larger . . I'm just heading towards a world which I can't even imagine. I want to know about myself . . | Hemisphere Sakamoto Maaya

The Future | The song Hemisphere reflects the uncertainty of the future for a young person. He or she had grown up and without her realizing, it was time for her to be on her own. He or she was leaving her comfort zone and unsure of where to go. There was a lot of things she does not know and a lot to learn. In the end, he or she decides to go on a journey to discover him/herself. The song is a good reflection of how I feel. Time had passed by me fast and too soon, I find myself all grown up. But what is growing up? I am still me. Still the same no matter how old I am. There was not much of a transition. And now I am expected to things that I had never done before. Where should I go from now on? Like the individual in the song, I wish to find myself and my path.
Stardust from above falls to the depths of hell As the curtain raises on a dark Grand Guignol Thanatos and Eros take each other's hand and dance A carnival of desires Everyone sees forbidden dreams alone in their hearts Now in the playground of a deserted golden tower A sweet recollection is found in the eye socket of a skull The more I pick up the rusty dagger and raise it over my chest The more my red blood boils with the agony of living A brilliant Paradise, a dictator's garden Time of a thousand and one nights in the city of demons You, who can sleep in this grotesque city, are a queen A virgin sacrifice With transparent wings, your pure soul meet the dawn A sin of death dressed upon a melodious stage To act is wrong, there is no lively applause from the holy judge The rose-colored warmth of your still form Is an offering to the void, the scent of dying flowers A phantom full moon; a cruel sun The never-ending lunar eclipse of the Grand Guignol A fallen angel and a demon hold hands and dance A awakening masquerade Everyone shivers in loneliness and remembers fear A brilliant Paradise, a dictator's garden Time of a thousand and one nights in the city of demons You, who can sleep in this grotesque cit, are a queen Pure smile, wash away my sin Stardust from above falls to the depths of hell As the curtain falls on a gloomy Grand Guignol Thanatos and Eros embrace and dance until the end An intoxicating Nirvana People cry for the words of God to bring light to the world | Lunar Eclipse Grand Guignol ALI Project

The majority is usually what defines normal and when you are not then you don't fit in. People who do not fit in are outcasts and often depressed. Others only judged them by how they looked--whether they were trendy or not--not by how they are on the inside.
I never really believed that where should be people needing to fit in. We are all individuals, why should be try to be the same?I guess, I was not exactly normal, but that was fine with me. Being alone was fine too. Being in the crowd is overrated and people often loose themselves trying. | Fitting In | Q: Why do we try to fit in? A: The 'in group' exist for a reason. Humans naturally distant themselves from things that are different. We gravitate towards groups. Statics showed that 39% of students said that physical appearance is the most common reason for people to be made fun of, followed by disability at 34%, and skin color at 30%. No one want to be bullied or left out so we try our best to be one of the crowd. Teen who do not fit in are less likely to get post secondary education. Why suffer through hell when you don't need to? We want to fit in so we can live out lives in peace.
Q: How is trying to fit in bad for us? A: We are humans because we are unique. If you try too hard to be like everybody else, then you lose your identity. We spend life trying to learn who we are so why abandon your identity? Also many people end up doing lots of bad things in their attempt to fit in. Some may become addicts because they tried to fit in by doing drugs or smoking with the 'in' people. We are all different and we should stay that way.
I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end And you could have all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt | Hurt Johnny Cash | I wear this crown f thorns Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end And you could have it all My empire of Dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way
Addiction | Most teenagers believe that they are invincible and thus become reckless. They are at an age where they are trying out new things and trying to fit in. Unfortunately, some would experiment with drugs and alcohol, for those are somehow 'in'. Many drug dealers prey on that mindset of teenagers.
Q:What are the emotional and physical effects of addiction? A: Most addicts turned to drugs to get rid of some sort of pain in their lives. But those short term reliefs have long term consequences. Drugs 'hijack' the brain's normal pathways and interfere with brain signals. It effects your judgment and make you dependent on the drug. You will get depressed without the drug and will do anything to get it. That means you will spend your fortune on the drug, even turning to crime when you run out of money. That can cut your off from your family and friends, making life even harder. Drugs and alcohol are also bad for the body. It lowers your body's natural functions and you can hurt yourself with the hallucinations. Alcohol attacks the liver and smoking can give you cancer. Even chocolate can give you diabetes. | Q: Where to get help? A: First of all prevention is the best. Go to presentations and see for yourself what kind of effects addiction may have on you. Some will never admit that they are addicted or refuse to seek help. You have taken the first step if you are ready to actively seek help. Support from your friends and families is crucial to recovery. It's not easy to try to overcome an addiction by yourself. Then seek professional help like your family doctor, organizations like Kids Help Phone, or clinics. Last resort--the police.
The song talked about the life of the singer. He got addicted to drugs to escape from pain but it only brought more pain. His life was falling apart and he was left behind. Everyone was going away and he was alone. In the end, he said that if he can start over, he would never get addicted. I can connect with him by the fact that he wanted something to dull that pain. I, too, did exactly that only with books not drugs. I drown myself in fantasy so I do not have to face reality. I have learned that the habit can be harmful as well. Fantasy cannot become reality and dreams we do not wake up from will eventually turn to sadness. | Addiction | Kid's Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 Distress Center: 266-1605 Teen Line: 264-8336 Youth Drug Line: 269-3784
