S: Jamestown Colony

FC: Jamestown Colony By Kira Hanson, Jane Smith, and Billy Jones

This book tells the story of the Jamestown Settlement in what is now Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the new world.

In 1607, 120 colonists settled on the James River, thinking it would be easy to defend.

John Smith said that Jamestown was "a very fit place for erecting a city"...or so he thought!

What John Smith didn't know was that... the land was low and swampy, the air was filled with disease-carrying mosquitoes, and the water was unsafe to drink.

Instead of planting crops for food, colonists searched for gold. As a result, many colonists died of starvation. By the end of the first year, only 38 of the 120 colonists were still alive.

Finally, John Smith takes charge. Colonists built houses. They dug wells for fresh water.

They planted crops. They traded with the Powhatan Indians. The corn that they got from the Powhatan helped keep the colonists alive.

John Rolfe raised a crop of tobacco, which soon became Virginia's cash crop.

Because tobacco is a labor-intensive crop and tobacco was in high demand, farmers needed more help. Indentured servants were brought to Jamestown.

An indentured servant agrees to work for someone for 3-7 years with the hopes of gaining freedom and purchasing their own land.

Unfortunately, many indentured servants died from disease, overwork, and unfair treatment by their masters. Then, a Dutch ship brought 20 Africans to Jamestown. Later, they would be enslaved. This was the beginning of slavery in the colonies.

In 1614, John Rolfe married Pocahontas. This helped maintain peace between the English colonists and the Powhatan people.

The House of Burgesses was the first lawmaking assembly in the colonies. This helped establish the tradition of self-government in the colonies.
