2: Jan Van Eyck was born around the year of 1395 in Maaseik, a municipality located in Limburg, Belgium.

4: Eyck's hometown was located on the river Meuse (Maas)...
5: ...which bordered the Burgundian Netherlands, where Eyck was thought to have lived.
6: Though there is not much known about Eyck's childhood, we do know that, as an adult, he loved to paint! He painted mostly with oil on wood, canvas, and panel.
7: This painting is one of Eyck's successful paintings, called The Arnolfini Portrait.
8: Eyck was a devout Catholic. One of his paintings, to the right, depicts Mary and an infant Jesus. It is called Madonna of Chancellor Rolin.
10: (It runs in the family!) Eyck was believed to have had two brothers who both were painters! Hubert van Eyck originated from the same town as Jan van Eyck. Also, Lambert van Eyck was his brother who was mentioned in Burgundian court documents.
12: During his time, Eyck became a respected and highly paid artist.
14: The Ghent Altarpiece (right) is considered Eyck's most famous piece. It depicts the adoration of the lamb, and was the first major oil painting in history. Adolf Hitler (Nazi dictator of WWII) was known for his obsession and adoration of this masterpiece. | He believed that it contained a coded map to lost Catholic treasures. And, he also believed the "Arma Christi" (instruments of Christ's Passion) would grant their owner supernatural powers.

18: He went on numerous, somewhat dangerous, fact finding missions for his royal patron, Philip the Good. | Besides painting, Eyck was regularly employed by the court as a sort of secret agent.
19: In addition to his work at the court, Eyck produced paintings for private clients.
20: Jan van Eyck Fun Facts -- Jan van Eyck's contemporaries referred to him as the King of Painters. --Only nine Jan van Eyck signed and dated paintings are known to exist. --He was one of the first to paint in oils. --He drew the bride in the Arnolfini Portrait wearing a green dress. The color green symbolizes fertility (the ability to produce children).
