Giovanni Cabot or as we know him today John Cabot was born in the year 1450 in Geona, Italy.
There is not much known about John's education. What people do know is that the Cabot family lived in the more wealthy part of the city. Also, they know that John's father [Julio] was a seaman, merchant, and owned a spice shop. At the time spices were very expensive and came mostly from Asia.
At the age of 11 John and his family moved to Venice, Italy in the year of 1461.
As John grew up he became interested in mapmaking and sailing. Thats not surprising since he grew up by water.
16 years after John moved to Venice he got married to a woman named Metta. Together they had three boys, Sebastian, Lewis, and Sanctus.
In 1484 John moved to Bristol, England. John's first voyage was in 1497. His voyages were sponsored by King Henry the 7th. John convinced the King to sponsor him by telling him he could find a shorter way to get to Asia. On John's first voyage he tried to find the Northwest passage, but he didn't succeed. He came back because of food shortages and arguments between his crew. The map above shows his route.
John's ship was called the Mathew. It was 75 feet long,18 feet wide, and carried up to 50 tons. John had a crew of 18 men.
His second and final voyage was in 1498. He never returned. Some people believe he got lost at sea and others think he might have came back to England and died in 1499, but know one truly knows what happened to him.
