FC: "Just a Little Bit More"

Expectations for Student Staff | Person First. Student Second.

 Staff Member Third.

A3 WOMEN IN SCIENCE & ENGINEERING & A2 MEN IN SCIENCE & ENGINEERING | What is the WISE program? A Support program for all women studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) fields. | “Leading the WISE way to Better Science & Engineering”

 A Tower = SWAG Tower

Since this is the WISE floor many of the residents have similar majors and similar classes. For example, there are about 15 people who are taking Calc 2 this semester. They are very interested in forming study groups for this class. I find many of them already starting to reach out to other people on the floor. Also, I recently saw that one of the boys’ clusters invited the girls to watch a football game and do homework on Sunday. This shows that they can still have a good time, socialize, and get their work done. | COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

First Year Experience FYE 1 FYE 2 FYE 3,4,5 WISE DINNERS: SEPT OCT NOV DEC FUTURE

FYE #1: Juicy Jeopardy | Objective: Play a game of Jeopardy that informs residents about useful UIC & Campus Housing info.

FYE #2: Time Management Olympics | Objective: Residents were asked to participate in various team building activities that had a time management theme.

FYE #3: Relationships | Objective: Through effective role playing, residents were able to learn how to handle certain conflicts (music too loud, bad relationships).

FYE #4: Safety on Campus | Objective: A representative from the wellness center came to speak about safety on campus. She gave free whistles and also addressed some of the Safety Alerts UIC sends us. | FYE #5: Academic Planning | Objective: We were given very detailed step-by-step information to give to residents on viewing their Dars Report, dropping a class, calculating GPA, and ordering textbooks.

WISE DINNERS SEPT: Welcome Home! | Objective: For residents to socialize among the floor mates and also speak with Professor Malchow (Biology) and Professor Reed (Engineering) while we enjoyed delicious cake, garlic bread and spaghetti.

WISE DINNERS OCT: Research | Objective: A306 came wanted to know more about how they could get involved with research on campus. We invited some staff members (Naheed & Libby)to share their experiences and made delicious pizzas.

WISE DINNERS NOV: Engineering | Objective: A312 helped plan a nacho and quesadilla dinner while we invited Paula from AAAN to talk about her experience in working in the engineering field as a woman.

WISE DINNERS DEC: Rest & Relaxation | Objective: Many girls were stressed with finals so we had a session of breathing exercises in the A-tower Lounge.

WISE DINNERS JAN: A Nutrition Lesson | Objective: A302 will help to facilitate a nutrition lesson. They will prepare some delicious and healthy snacks while they share the benefits of certain foods. | Future

WISE DINNERS FEB: Welcome Home Part 2 | Objective: Jeff & I will work with the Engineering floor to plan a dinner in which we will invite faculty and enjoy some Fettuccine Alfredo and garlic bread. | Programs

Using the Programming Model | When planning the WISE dinners and FYEs I kept the location and time consistent. I also maintained as organized as possible creating to-do lists and writing it on my planner/calendar. The publicity was also good; I used posters that I posted on their doors and sent emails. | Reflecting Back

What would I do differently next year... | What I would do differently and am already starting to do this Spring semester is get more of the residents' input. If they get more of a voice/input, then there will be more attendance. Also on the side of dinners, I would include more social and fun programs. | on Programs

LEADERSHIP: My Top 5 Strengths | 1.Relator – enjoy close relationships with others and find a deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal. 2.Developer – Recognize and cultivate potential in others and spot the signs of each small improvement and drive satisfaction from these improvements. 3.Learner – Have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them. 4.Achiever – Have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take great satisfaction from being busy and productive. 5.Positivity – Have an enthusiasm that is contagious. They are upbeat and can get others excited about what they are going to do.

Reflection: Leadership with Staff Team: | JEFF: After reflecting on my individual role on my staff team, I believe that I was a silent leader/supporter. When other staff members needed my help I was there to show support and encouragement. For example, Jeff and I planned the MAP party together. Many of our residents showed interest in playing a game of flag football. We decided to hold a game of football and then return to eat some pizzas. It rained on that day so we did not get to hold the game, but will plan to have a game this semester. Also, Jeff and I planned a program (trip to ICream) on my birthday. We got a good-sized group to attend and I got a free large cup! | MICHA: I showed continual support at the program Micha organized called “Girl Talk.” I helped by shopping for snacks, spreading the word to my residents, and participating in discussions. NAHEED: I also showed continual support by attending other programs people held throughout JST. I attended and helped clean up at Naheed’s smoothie party. I helped Lalo & B-Tower with his GUACA GUACA program as well.

 ICREAM PICS!

Pointing People in the Right Direction | Resources: I make sure all of my residents know that I am here to help them out. And when I don't know the right answer i'll direct them to someone who does. I also post all resource information in front of my door, so if they have any questions they can just knock.

LEADERSHIP - AMONG RESIDENTS: Leadership has been shown when a group of girls planned a Disney Movie Night Program. Also, in each of the WISE dinners all the participants in the cluster help and contribute in a certain way (cook, shop, clean up, set up, and finding a speaker). We also have 6 floor leaders this semester.

WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT YEAR: | 1. At our first floor meeting, I would pass out the Resident Involvement Survey (We used it at the beginning of the second semester). It sparked resident's interest instantly and received feedback on participation (Community Dinner/Late Night). 2. Form committees from the survey that would help with decorations, programming, bulletin boards & door decs. 3. Ask about floor leaders during mid-first semester. 4. Effectively plan in advance (Programs, Door Decs, Bulletin Boards). 5. Maintain a solid presence on the floor - Open Door Policy, 2 floor meetings per semester. 6. Plan fun programs outside of dinners - MOVIE NIGHTS

Inspirational Quotes: | 1. "Whatever you are, be a good one" - Abraham Lincoln 2. "Every community is a group, but not every group is a community" 3. "Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there someday." - Winnie-the-Pooh 4. "It's no use being brilliant if you can't communicate with your client." - Abraham Lincoln 5. "Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett
