FC: Kevin Everett: a Story of Near Death and Recovery
Who am I? I grew up in a big city, I had a lot of family troubles. I have a wonderful life so far. As a boy, I played a lot of sports. I always loved football, I went to college at Miami FL. I played tight end, And was one of the best. I was drafted to the Bills, had 2 good seasons. Rookie season was good, Second was decent. In 2007, Was paralyzed on field, Laid motionless for 15 min. Carted off to hospital. Was stuck in hospital for a month, Recovered little by little every week. I fully recovered thankfully, And now live a happy life with my wife. Who am I?
The Death Defying Injury By: JT Smith NFL tight end Kevin Everett took a little trip, to the hospital. On September 9, 2007, Kevin was paralyzed on a kick return in Buffalo, New York. One person said “the hit was at the perfect angle and location for an injury like this”. He lied motionless on the field for 15 min. until he was carted off the field. Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett was excited for the season opener against the Denver Broncos. This is his 3rd season in the NFL, and they were all with the Bills. On the kick return in the second quarter, Kevin dived for the tackle, had a helmet to helmet collision, and laid on the ground around the 20 yard line. He spent some of his NFL and college career with an injury. He missed his senior season at Miami FL with a shoulder injury. If he hadn't of have the injury, he could've been drafter earlier like in the first round. He was drafted in the 6th round by the Buffalo Bills.
March 12, 2008 Dear Diary, I have gained complete power in my entire body, so this is my first diary entry in a long time. It all started the day of the season opener last year. That morning was a normal day as always. I drove to the stadium and did all my basic routines before a game. I was ready for the season opener, but I had a strange feeling that something would happen. We started the game off good, until the kick return. I ran fort he returner as fast as I could. I dived for the tackle, and then ended up having a helmet-to-helmet collision with him, and laid motionless. I couldn't feel a thing from my neck down. I knew I was paralyzed. I was finally carted off the field 15 min. later, and then rushed to the hospital. The only thing I remember was being taken away to surgery. I remember hearing that I might not survive the surgery, but I know god will let me live. The next morning, I woke up in the hospital with little feeling from my neck below. The doctor told me that I broke 2 of my vertebrae. I had a full line of recovery ahead of me, but I will survive. About a few months later in December, I could walk with a walker whenever I want. I remember going to the mall in Houston, and everybody was congratulating me. Today, I am getting ready for my wedding with my wife, Wiande. I have full feeling, and life is a lot easier now. I learned that to live life like its your last day.
3/12/08 Dear Mom, I wanted to tell you that I finally was able to get all my strength back today. This will be the best day of my life. Ever since that football game, my life changed forever. It was a cool, sunny day in Buffalo, New York. I woke that morning excited for my first football game of the season. I was driving to the game, and I felt this feeling that something would happen. Being in the hospital was a drag, but I felt good when you and Wiande were there. You took care of me more than the doctors, and I just loved that. You were always by my side and never left. With Wiande there, it was even better. It would've been better if some other family showed up, but you guys were plenty. I was so excited to go back to Buffalo. I was excited because I wanted to see my teammates and whats going on in there life's. It also felt good to get out of Houston and visit the new and the old. With the help of you and Wiande, everything in life was simpler and better. Thanks to you and your help, I can walk and live like a normal person right now. Thank you. Sincerely, Kevin Everett
Kevin Everett was very interested into football since an early age. His favorite position is tight end and wide receiver. Every Sunday, he would watch the Houston Texans play their football game on TV. He would play with his friends every week in his backyard. In high school, he played tight end for his team. He was one of the best, and went to play football at Miami FL. He played 3 great seasons there, but he was out for his senior season with an injury. He was then drafted to the Buffalo Bills in the NFL draft. For his first 2 seasons, he didn’t start every game, but he was a special team’s threat. On the first game of his 3rd NFL season, Kevin was paralyzed on the field during a football game. He was in intensive care for a month, but he safely recovered. Today, he lives with his wife, and still has a love for football. Due to his injury, he had to retire from the NFL. Kevin can still play football if he wants, but he can't do it professionally.
