2: John Steinbeck | John Steinbeck was an American author.He was born in Salinas, California in 1902. John attended Standford University after graduating high school. John wrote a total of twenty-seven books, and he won many awards, including the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Pulitzer Prize. John Steinbeck died on December 20,1969 from a heart disease and was later cremated.
4: Setting | Village Life | Kino lived in La Paz,Mexico in a village. Kino and his family lived in brush houses.
5: The wealthier people, such as the Doctor, live here. Rarely did the wealthy people visit the village which Kino lived in. | City Life
6: Kino | Kino discovers the pearl. Kino is Coyotito's father. Kino is Juana's husband.
7: Juana | Juana is the wife of Kino. Juana is Coyotito's mother.
8: Coyotito | Coyotito is Juana and Kino's son. Coyotito was killed by a tracker.
9: Doctor | The doctor was one of the wealthier people in the town. The doctor never came to check on Kino's village. The doctor only wanted to help the wealthy.
10: Chapter One | In the first chapter, we meet an Indian man named Kino. We also meet his wife, Juana, and his son, Coyotito. Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion, and he is threatened with his life. Kino and Juana try to go see a doctor, but the doctor refuses because they do not have enough money. The Mexican doctor left the family with hope that they could come up with pearls to pay.
11: Chapter Two | After the doctor refuses to see Coyotito, Kino goes peal hunting. He ends up finding the pearl of the world. Kino finally found the money to visit the doctor, but Coyotito's swollen shoulder had gone down.
12: Chapter Three | Once Kino finds the pearl of the world, the news spreads like wildfire around the town. Everyone became jealous and made enemies with him. The doctor comes to visit, and the baby becomes sick with the doctor's medicine, so the doctor will look like a hero. Also, someone broke in and stabbed Kino. Kino and his family decide to sell the pear.
13: Chapter Four | When the day came for Kino to sell the pearl, everyone wore their nicest clothes, and they went with Kino and his family. The appraisers tried to cheat Kino, so he decided he would go uptown and sell it elsewhere. When Kino goes back home, he is cut on the cheek by someone, and they decide to leave the town in the morning,.
14: Chapter Five | When Juana tries to throw the pearl in the water because it is evil, Kino beats her. Kino then murders a man for self defense, and their house is burned down. Kino and Juana decide to leave at night.
15: Chapter Six | As Kino and Juana are walking at night, they notice trackers are following them. Kino and his family try to hide their trail, but the trackers are still close behind them. Kino decides to try to ambush the men at night while they are asleep and take the rifle. They wake up, and as Kino grabs the gun, he shoots. The bullet kills his son, Coyotito. Kino and Juana return home , and they throw the pearl back in the ocean.
16: Theme | The theme of The Pearl is that you cannot trust your eyes. Kino believes that the pearl can bring happiness because it looks valuable, but the pearl ends up bringing evil. It also brings death on Coyotito.
