1: MARY WAS THE ELDEST OF 8 CHILDREN | MARY WORKED AS A TEACHER TO EARN A LIVING | MARY OPEN THE FIRST ST JOSEPHS SCHOOL IN PENOLA | MARY WAS BORN ON JAN 15TH 1842

2: AT THE AGE OF SIXTEEN SHE STARTED WORK AS A GOVERNESS TO SUPPORT HER FAMILY AND AS A TEACHER AT THE PORTLAND SCHOOL. WHILE SHE WAS ACTING A GOVERNESS FOR HER UNCLES CHILDREN SHE MET FATHER TENSINGWOODS. WHO NEEDED HELP IN EDUCATING CHILDREN IN RELIGION WHO LIVED IN THE OUTBACK. AT THE TIME MARY WAS UNABLE TO DO THIS BECAUSE OF HER FAMILY WAS DEPENEDING ON HER INCOME.

3: IN 1866 SHE OPENED HER FIRST SCHOOL WHICH WAS CALLED SAINT JOSEPHS SCHOOL WHICH WAS DISGUISED AS A STABLE IN PENOLA. SHE DID THIS UNDER THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF FATHER WOODS.

4: YOUNG WOMAN CAME TO JOIN MARY SO SHE STARTED THE CONGREGATION OF THE SISTERS OF SAINT JOSEPH. IN 1867 MARY WAS ASKED TO START A SCHOOL IN ADELAIDE BY BISHOP SHEIL. FROM THERE THE SISTERS SPERAD IN LITTLE GROUPS TO THE OUTBACK AND MAJOR CITIES OF AUSTRALIA NEW ZELAND, AND NOW IN PERU, BRAZIL AND REFUGEE CAMPS OF UGANDA AND THAILAND.

5: THROUGHOUT HER LIFE MARY WAS MET WITH OPPOSITION FROM PEOPLE OUSIDE THE CHURCH AND WITHIN IT. ALTHOUGH SHE REFUSED TO ATTACK THOSE WHO WRONGLY ACCUSED HER EVEN IN THE MOST DIFFICULT TIMES. SHE CONTIUED HER WORK FOR GOD IN THE WAY SHE THOUGHT HE NEEDED HER WHILE FORGIVING THOSE WHO WRONGLY ACCUSED HER.

6: MARY WAS VERY ILL FOR MOST OF HER LIFE AND ON THE 8TH OF AUGUST 1909 SHE DIED. HER TOMB IS IN NORTH SYDNEY. SINCE HER DEATH THE CONGOGRATION HAS GROWN TO ABOUT 1200 PEOPLE. tHEY ARE MAINLY IN aUSTRALIA ANS NEW ZEALAND.
