FC: By: Bailey Braunstein Period:1 4/4/11 | The Middle Colonies!

1: What types of diversities were displayed throughout the middle colonies?

2: Locations and geographic influences of the middle colonies. | New York! The colony of New York had many trees, water sources, fertile soil, and good agriculture. These factors led to good farming lands. Being so close to the ocean there was also ship building | Pennsylvania! Had large areas of land that were perfect for farming and agriculture. Ship building was also done here because of its location near the coast

3: Delaware! Has over fifty freshwater lakes and ponds, which led to a fish industry. Being on the coast there was also an industry that consisted of shipbuilders, merchants, landowners and farmers. | New Jersey! Also known as the "Bread Basket" got its name from farmers and mill owners growing many different kinds of wheat. New Jerseys location was perfect for farming. The settlers also had farm animals such as cows, chickens, hogs and sheep.

4: Economic Trades/ Opportunities | "Trade in the Middle Colonies included exported agricultural products and natural resources, imported European manufactured goods." ES | THINGS THEY TRADED: Wheat,copper, livestock, animal products,beer,rum, food stuff etc. * They mostly traded raw materials for manufactured items * Trading help the colonies prosper

5: Natural Resources Used by Colonial Economics! | * Longer growing period-climate * Waterfalls to run mills- mountains * Iron ore- from the mountains *Fresh water * Animals/food already on the land/furs | *Trees- shipbuilding, housing, fire wood etc. * Natural harbors- easy trade * Good soil- farming:corn, vegetables, grain, fruit and livestock.

6: Religious Beliefs | Religion in the middle colonies greatly varied. With much religious freedom, different beliefs ranged drastically in the middle colonies. Including Dutch Mennonites, French Huguenots, German Baptists, English Puritans, Presbyterian, and Portuguese Jews. There was also larger groups of Dutch Reformed, Lutherans, Quakers, and Anglicans. Along with African Americans and the indigenous Indians, who had religious traditions of their own. Together these cultures formed a very diverse religious society. | Presbyterian church established by a Scotch-Irish community | Established in mid 1700s Pennsylvania | German Reform Church

7: Society | Society displayed much diversity throughout the middle colonies. New settlers were coming from many different countries, with different religions, backgrounds, cultures, ways of life, and social standings. There were people coming to this new land for many different reasons, creating a very wide ranged society. | Society was divided up into race and religion, but mostly by profession. *Farmers- Poor, African Americans-Slaves, Quakers, buisiness owners, and traders. Together these settlers made a very widespread society

8: William Penn Influence | Some colonists followed the ideas and were influenced by William Penn. While others disagreed and followed other ways of living . | William Penn provided a peaceful environment between natives and colonists. He created a system in which colonists treated the natives fairly.He regulated trade with them and made a court devised of both colonists and natives to settle any issues. "For more than 50 years the Pennsylvania colony had no major conflicts with Native Americans."

9: He saw the good in everyone. | William Penn had many people who valued his beliefs and agreed with his principles of equality, religious freedom, and cooperation. However as Pennsylvania became more inhabited, his ideas began to fade. There were still the dedicated Quakers, but as times changed some of the quakers began owning slaves. Which went against everything Penn was aiming for.
