S: The Pearl

BC: I think the moral of the story is not to be obsessed by greed. As long as Kino's motive to find the pearl was to save Coyotito, everything was good. When greed begins to consume the town, bad things begin to happen. Instead of Coyotito being saved, he is killed.

2: John Steinbeck

3: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. He made his way through college at Stanford University, but he never graduated. In 1925, he went to New York to try to establish himself as a writer. since he failed to do this, he came back to California. Steinbeck married Carol Henning in 1930. In 1943 John filed for divorce against Carol. He then married Gwyndolyn Conger, with whom he had two children. John Steinbeck died in New York City on December 20, 1968. He had heart disease and congestive heart failure.

5: La Paz La Paz received its name from Sebastian Vizcaino. He established La Paz in 1596. Throughout history, pirates anchored near La Paz to services their vessels. The top picture on the left is the part of town where the doctor and rich people live. The bottom photo shows where Kino and the poor people live.

9: Doctor The doctor was very prejudice. He became the doctor of Coyotito after he found out Kino was rich.

10: Chapter 1 In this chapter we are introduced to Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, and Juana wants the doctor to see him. The doctor does not come, so Kino and Juana take the baby to him. The doctor says that he has been called to a more serious case. Kino gets furious with the doctor and punches the wall.

11: Chapter 2 Kino and Juana get in Kino's canoe to look for pearls. Juana puts seaweed on Coyotito to help cure him. Kino finds the Pearl of the World. The baby's shoulder gets healed.

12: Chapter 3 Kino sees great things when he looks into the pearl. Kino wishes for all these wonderful things. The doctor tricks Kino and Juana by telling them that Kino is not cured, but he really is. In the middle of the night, someone tries to steal the pearl. Kino and Juana make a decision to sell the pearl the next day.

13: Chapter 4 Kino and Juana go to the pearl buyers. The pearl buyers are cheating Kino. He says he will leave and go sell his pearl at the capitol. Kino is attacked, and Juana wants to throw the pearl back into the sea.

14: Chapter 5 Juana tries to throw the pearl in the sea, but Kino catches her. Kino is attacked once again. Kino accidentally kills the man. Kino's family hides in Juan Tomas's hut for now. The will leave at night to escape from the town.

15: Chapter 6 Kino and Juana walk all night to flee from the town. They stop to relax during the day, but they spot the trackers coming for them. Now they have to go in the mountains and hide. They hide in a cave, but the trackers are right under them. Kino jumps down and attacks the trackers. One of the trackers shoot the rifle, and he accidentally shoots the baby in the head. Kino and Juana head back to La Paz, and Kino throws the pearl back into the sea.
