BC: YOUR TURN TO TRY IT :) GO ON A SCAVENGER HUNT AROUND THE CLASSROOM AND MEASURE ITEMS USING DIFFERENT OBJECTS!! ENJOY!
FC: Estimating and Measuring Length using Nonstandard Units | Ms. Martinez
1: So what is Nonstandard Measurement? Nonstandard measurement is when you use objects like the ones in the pictures above to find how long things are. | Notecard | Paperclip | Pencil | Other objects you can use are: *Erasers *Pens *Crayons
2: Other objects you can use to measure different things! | Some are long while others are short! Keep this in mind!
3: So how exactly do we measure different things in the classroom using these objects? | I am going to measure: * A book * A table * A large sticky-note
4: Measuring a Table... | I am going to measure it first with paperclips and then with a piece of paper. | Measuring the table with the piece of paper was much easier...! | It is about 55 paperclips long. | It is about 6 pieces of paper long. | (Little silver things are the paperclips)
5: Measuring a Book... | I am going to measure it first with a notecard and then with a small sticky note. | Measuring the book with the notecards was much easier...! | It is about 2 notecards long. | It is about 5 small sticky notes long.
6: Measuring a large sticky-note | I am going to measure it first with the paperclips and then with a pencil. | Measuring the large sticky note with the paperclips was much easier...! | It is about 3 paperclips long. | It is one-half of a pencil long.
7: What can we tell from measuring these 3 items? | Objects that are long are much easier to measure with longer things. Example: To measure a table=use a piece of paper | Objects that are short are much easier to measure with shorter things. Example: To measure a bookmark=use a small paperclip
