3: John Steinbeck | John Steinbeck (1902-1968), born in Salinas, California, came from a middle class family. He worked his way through college at Stanford University but never graduated. In 1925 he went to New York, where he tried for a few years to establish himself as a free-lance writer, but he failed and returned to California. After publishing some novels and short stories, Steinbeck first became widely known with Tortilla Flat (1935), a series of humorous stories about Monterey paisanos. Steinbeck published 13 more novels before spending the last decades of his life with his third wife in New York City. He died on December 20th, 1968.

5: La Paz, New Mexico (1800's) | La Paz is located in Mexico . It is made up of both sandy, rural beaches, and opulent wealthy living. Many of the poorer Indian Families in La Paz live in Brush Houses.
6: Mother of Coyotito and Wife of Kino | KINO | JUANA | Juana is the mother of the novel. she stays loyal and strong to her family throughout the entire story. she is very wise and tries to warn others of potential danger. She attempts to eliminate the pearl and all the danger along with it. | Father of Coyotito, and Husband of Juana | Kino is the main character in the novel. He is Juana's husband and Coyotito's father. He is the discover of the pearl. He is in a constant battle with himself throught the entire novel struggling with evil and good. In the end, he will discover that none of it was worth it.
7: COYOTITO | APOLLONIA | Son of Kino and Juana | Coyotito is the son of Kino and Juana. Coyotito has many trials and tribulations during the course of this novel. However, Coyotito's trials eventually get the best of him. | Apollonia is the wife of Juan Thomas. She is the sister-in-law of Kino and Juana. Appolonia is caring. | Wife of Juan Thomas
8: Chapter One. | Kino spends a peaceful morning in his village. A scorpion bites Coyotito. Kin and Juana, alongside the village go to the Doctor's house in the city. The doctor refuses to help Kino. Kino gets mad and punches the gate.
9: Chapter Two. | Kino, Juana, and Coyotito go pearl fishing. Juana makes a poultice to heal Coyotito. Kino finds a large shell, but saves it for last to open. After opening all his shells, he opens the large shell. Kino discovers the Pearl of the world.
10: Chapter 3 | News spreads throughout the town of the discovery of Kino's pearl. Friends and family visit Kino and Juana. Kino dreams of ways to use his money. The doctor comes to the brush house and claims to heal Coyotito. Kino is awoken by an intruder. Kino is left bloodied, and Juana suggests destroying the Pearl.
11: Chapter 4 | Kino prepares to sell his Pearl. The pearlers try to convince Kino that his pearl is fake. A pearler finally offers Kino 1,500 pesos. Kino leaves believing he has been cheated. Kino makes plans to go to the capital to sell his pearl. An intruder assaults Kino.
12: Chapter 5 | In the middle of the night, Juana takes the pearl and attempts to destroy it. Kino beats her. A group of men attack Kino. Juana finds the pearl. Kino murdered a man. Kino, Coyotito, and Juana hide in the forest and wait until dark to continue on an escape journey.
13: Chapter 6 | The three fight against harsh weather conditions and travel to hiding. Trackers follow their every move. A tracker hears Coyotitos cry and mistakes him as a Coyote. He shoots and kills Coyotito. Kino and Juana return to La Paz.
14: THEME | The theme of this story is that one can never let possessions or material things overcome ones life. Because in the end, your life will be destroyed.
