3: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, and graduated six years later without taking a degree. Steinbeck supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City. John Steinbeck died in 1968, after he won a Nobel Prize in 1962.
4: La Paz | La Paz is the setting of the story. Race and wealth are the biggest problems between people here. It was founded in 1548 by Spanish conquistadors.
5: As you can see, La Paz has rich places and poor places. Kino and Juana lived in the poor part, and the doctor lived in the rich part.
6: Kino is the "husband" of Juana and the father of Coyotito. He is the man of the house, and everything he says goes. | Kino
7: Juana | Juana is the "wife" of Kino, and the mother of Coyotito.
8: Coyotito | Coyotito is the son of Kino and Juana. He is their only child.
9: The beggars are the poor people. | Beggars
10: Chapter 1 In this chapter, we met Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. Coyotito gets stung by a scorpion. Juana sucks the venom out.
11: Chapter 2 Kino, Juana, and Coyotito go looking for pearls. Juana puts a seaweed poultice on Coyotito. Kino finds the Pearl of the World. The swelling on Coyotito's shoulder goes down.
12: Chapter 3 News travels fast, and everyone already knows Kino has found the Pearl of the World. Kino is going to sell the pearl, and with the money he is going to get married, give his son an education, get himself a harpoon, and a rifle. Kino gets attacked by something evil, and Juana thinks it's because of the pearl.
13: Chapter 4 Kino is going to sell his pearl. He thinks the price the pearl buyers offer isn't fair, so he is going to go to the capital. Kino gets attacked again by something evil.
14: Chapter 5 Juana tries to slip out of the house in the middle of the night to throw the pearl in the sea. Kino catches her and won't let her. Kino gets attacked again, and has to kill a man to save himself. Kino and Juana have to hide in Juan Tomas and Apollonia's house until they can get to the capital.
15: Chapter 6 Kino and Juana are going to the capital. They are being tracked by three men. Kino tries to kill the main man, but when he shoots the rifle it shoots Coyotito in the head, and he dies. Kino and Juana go back home and throw the pearl back into the sea.
