3: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. John went to Stanford in 1919 to study literature before he left in 1925 without a degree. John was a writer, filmmaker, and a marine biologist. John Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962 , and later died in 1968.

4: Setting La Paz, Mexico | Kino's people live in brush houses on the outskirts of La Paz, Mexico.

5: The Spanish and the doctor live in the wealthy part of La Paz.

6: Kino is the husband of Juana, and the father of Coyotito | Kino

7: Juana is the wife of Kino, and mother of Coyotito. | Juana

8: Coyotito is the son of Juana and Kino. | Coyotito

9: The pearl buyers try to trick Kino into selling the pearl for a very cheap price | Pearl Buyers

10: Chapter 1 Summary | In the first chapter, Coyotito is stung by a scorpion. Juana shockingly demands for a doctor. The next day, Kino and the people of the brush houses go into the town to see the doctor.

11: Chapter 2 Kino and Juana set out to sea to find a pearl. While diving Kino finds the greatest pearl in the world. When Kino comes up with the pearl, Juana notices the swelling on Coyotitos sting has receded.

12: Chapter 3 | In chapter 3, the news of the great pearl spread rapidly. Kino decided to sell the pearl to in order to improve the life of Coyotito. The doctor and the priest come to try to get a portion of money from the pearl. The doctor tricks Kino and Juana into believing he cured Coyotito.

13: Chapter 4 Kino goes into town to sell the pearl. The pearl buyers try to trick Kino into selling the pearl for a very low price. Kino decides to go to the capital to sell the pearl

14: Chapter 5 | Juana tries to throw the pearl back to the sea. Kino wakes up, chases Juana down and beats her. On the way back to the hut, Kino is attacked. Kino kills his attacker, then notices smoke and fire coming from his home. Kino later finds a hole in his canoe, and decides he needs to leave for the capital as soon as possible.

15: Chapter 6 | Kino, Juana, and Coyotito set off for the capital. Kino notices they are being followed by trackers. To hide, Kino and his family head into the mountains and hide in a cave. At night, Kino heads out of the cave to kill the trackers. When Kino is about to attack, Coyotito cries. The trackers think it is a coyote, and shoot at the cave. At the moment of the shot, Kino attacks the trackers and takes a rifle. One tracker gets away, but Kino shoots him with the rifle. The shot from the tracker struck coyotito in the head and killed him. Kino and Juana return home, and throw the pearl back to sea.

16: Moral | The moral of the story is things are not always as they appear. The pearl appears beautiful to Kino when he first found it, but later sees the pearl as ugly and evil.
