FC: Civil War Weaponry By Jeremy Hanson
Everything in this book is dedicated to all the people who made sacrifices in the civil war
Two categories, smoothed and riffled. Loaded by muzzle. made of steel, bronze, or iron, depending on resources. North and south preferred the napoleon smooth bored cannon. Had a range of 1700yds, most effective at 250yds. most casualties then any other cannon used in the civil war. Cannons could shoot different types of cannon balls including solid shot, grape, canister, and chain shot.
Small arms Anything smaller then a cannon. included muskets(smooth bore),riffle(riffled groves), and handguns. Both sides favored the .58 caliber Springfield musket, and the .69 caliber Harper Ferry. Breechloaders were faster but took more ammo. Breechloaders were primarily used by calvary
Edged weapons Bayonet's,sabers, swords, short swords, cutlasses, bowie knives, lances, and pikes. Very few casualties by edged weapons. Sabers were originally 42" long and called "wrist breakers", then cut down to 36" made it much more effective. Weapon shortage lead to the south considering arming the men with lances, and spikes. Bowie knifes were popular among the confederate soldiers.
Minnie Ball Before the mini ball was invented riffles were limited to skilled marksmen. The tight fitting mini ball was very tight and hard to ram down the muzzle this was very time consuming. In 1848 the mini ball was reinvented to be easily rammed down the muzzle. The mini ball was able to reach half a mile, and an average person could hit a target at 250 yards.
What did the mini ball do in the war? The mini ball made it easier to load the weapon and easier to hit the target farther. Did the mini ball have a large or small impact on the war? In my opinion the mini ball made a large impact on the war because it made it much easier to load the weapon and hit a target much further. Who benefited from the mini ball? Both sides used the mini ball and improved there sides effectiveness so neither side did not benefit from the mini ball.
What if the mini ball was not around in the war? I think that the war probably would have went longer and not as many deaths. Would life have been different if there was no mini ball? I do not think it have made a big difference to the average person. Is the min ball still around today? There are people who try and find out what will make a bullet fly further and straighter. The mini ball is still around, if you hunt muzzle loader it uses a small lead ball.
