9: Plot | Jonas is a twelve year old boy who lives in a perfect world. This world is the world of the communities; a world without differences. It is a world controlled by rules governing every aspect of life. It is a world without choices. Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory, and is told that he will be trained by The Giver, the current Receiver, to hold all of the community's memories. He is also told that it will involve pain and total isolation from the community. All this happens when he starts seeing the color red. Not everything in this world is actually perfect;one example is release - the people of the community think it is when people are sent to a place called "Elsewhere", but are actually killed. Jonas wants to escape from the community, if he fails the price is death. Two questions: the first one is "Will he succeed?" The second is one is "Is life really better without choices?"

11: Evaluation | This novel has certain ominous feelings that make it interesting, and is one reason I like this book. Another reason is the plot, but there are also many interesting characters in The Giver. The Giver seems to be a lot like Artemis Fowl. One way that they are alike is that they are both written in third person form, and about teenagers. One way they are different is that one is science fiction and the other is fantasy.
