FC: The Great Depression

The Great Depression was caused by many different reasons. The five main reasons were because of the Stock Market Crash in 1929, banks failing, people not spending as much as they normally would, rising taxes on trading with different countries, and drought conditions that led to less food being available.

The Great Depression lasted from 1930 to 1939. Many believe the crash of the Stock Market was the beginning of the depression. The end of the depression was around the time WWII began in 1939.

Women worked for lower wages than men during the Great Depression which increased employment for women, but also raised unemployment for men. As a result, men had to be creative and find ways to earn their living. More than 6,000 men sold apples on the streets of New York City to earn an income that supported themselves and their families.

African American families during the Great Depression often had it harder than the average white American family. Racial discrimination caused blacks to be fired from their jobs before whites.

Throughout the United States families struggled to have enough food to feed their children and keep a roof over their heads. In 1932, one out of every five children in New York City was malnourished.

Malnutrition from poor diets caused serious health problems in poverty stricken families. | During the Great Depression, women often had to hold full time jobs beside day to day chores.

Poverty in the cities resulted in less demand for farm products. As a result, farmers incomes decreased and many farmers foreclosed on their farms. Migrant farmworkers were forced to return to Mexico by the U.S. government. The immigrants who did not leave faced discrimination and harsh working conditions.
