FC: The Great Plains Indians
1: Native Americans traveled thousands of years ago in the grassy prairies and rolling hill of the Great Plains.The Spanish explores brought horses in the area in the 1700s. On the Great Plains about 30 tribes lived there.The Great Plains traveled on grassy prairies. This area is covered what is today Central America to theRocky Mountains.Tribes would also travel farther to hunt buffalo.
2: The Great Plains lived in family groups but they decided how many people live in each group. Each family had men to protect the group and hunt food. Some of the groups were bigger so they make them into tribes. Chiefs would come together and talk about lands and hunting food. The chiefs and the councils made the decisions for the people.
3: Some Great plains Indians made their homes. Some of them made tepees.They made tepees out of cone shaped tent made of poles and animal skins. The women sewed the animal skins to put on houses. The Great Plains also lived in round houses covered wood frames with grass.
4: The Great Plains hunted food. They hunted in fall and spring for buffalo. Some of the women dried extra meat. Some people traveled and gathered vegetables and berries too.They knew what season to find each food and how the seasons changed.
5: Great Plains Indians made their clothing. Women soaked deer or buffalo so the hair could fall off. The women used soft skin to make dresses. They often decorated their cloth. They also used elk teeth to decorate shirts.
6: The horses of the Great Plains were a sign of wealth. Some of the tribes traded horses for food. They also traded horses for the hides, tools and guns.
7: The Great Plains Indians were busy farming. Children learned skills that they would need.The boys hunted rabbits. They also took care of the horses. Girls would help their mothers gather food.
8: The Great Plains respected their traditions . They believed in the Earth, Sun and Sky Spirits. Some of them danced to honer the spirits. The dance thanked the spirits for health and food.
