FC: The Gupta Empire
1: Hello Fellow world cultures students and welcome to CrowAir. I, Michaela, will be assisting Mrs. Crow today on our flight back in time. 2: The Gupta Empire!
3: Everyone look at the map on the TV in front of you now. The Gupta Empire was located in the northern and central parts of India and Bangladesh. It included the Ganges river and the Ganges valley in it.
4: Now onto the government. | Gupta kings ruled the whole empire. | The empire was split into several provinces. | Viceroys (picked from among the royal family) ruled each province. | Each province was divided into a series of districts. | Each district was ruled by its own administrative center and the highest officer in a district connected the center to the district.
5: Now for accomplishments! Art, literature, and mathematics were very popular in the Gupta Empire. Artists would paint all over the walls of caves. Gupta writers and poets wrote excellent dramas and poems, the most popular being a playwright called Kalidasa. They were also brilliant in mathematics. They invented the concept of zero as well as the decimal system using
6: symbols for 1-9. They also figured out the correct size and shape of earth. The most common religion practiced in the Gupta Empire was Buddhism.
7: The time that the Gupta Empire ruled was considered a "golden age" because it was a period of time in India's history where arts and literature and other stuff where at their peak of brilliance. | Kalidasa --->
8: Now look at the small cartoon. The Gupta Empire began when a young warrior united the north. He took the name Chandragupta 1, and then set up the Gupta Dynasty. The Gupta Empire lasted from A.D. 320 to A.D. 535, though some Gupta rulers kept on ruling Magadha until A.D. 720.

10: Before the decline of the empire, some other strong leaders (Chadgupta's son and grandson, Samudra Gupta and Chandra Gupta II) expanded the empire westward. After these the empire suffered invasions and declined.
