FC: THE OCEANS LIFE IN THE WATER
the oceans life in the water | ESCOLA ESPIGA 2009-2010
THE EaRTH'S OCEANS | The oceans contain 97% of the Earth's water. No other planet in our Solar System has liquid water. The oceans are an extraordinary web of life.
THE FIVE OCEANS | The oceans are all connected to one another. There are five oceans: The Pacific Ocean The Atlantic Ocean The Indian Ocean The Southern ocean The Artic Ocean
WHY ARE THE OCEANS SALTY | In rivers, water picks up mineral salts from the rocks and soil. This salty water flows in to the oceans and seas. The water in the oceans only leaves by evaporating. The salt remains dissolved in the ocean-it does not evaporate. So the sea water gets saltier and saltier.
WAVES | The wind causes waves on the surface of the ocean. The water in the waves doesn't move horizontally. It only moves up and down. Tsunamis are caused caused by volcanic eruptions underwater. | OCEANS IN MOTION
Tides are periodical rises and falls of ocean water. Tides are caused by the pull of the moon. Two tides occur every day. | TIDES
CURRENTS | The horizontal and vertical circulation of oceans waters are called currents. Currents are caused by: wind friction, gravity and variation in water density in different parts of the ocean.
LIFE IN THE OCEAN | Most of the life in the oceans develops in the euphotic zone. It's the layer of water bathed in sunlight. It extends around 200 meters. In this zone there is enough light for photosynthesis to take place.
OCEAN HABITATS | SHORELINES | CORAL REEFS | OPEN OCEANS | DEEP OCEANS
SHORELINES | Organisms living in the intertidal zone on a beach have adapted to the changing conditions. Without the cover of water many animals simply shut down.
ANIMALS THAT LIVE IN THE SHORELINES | Clam | Mussel | Scallop | Limpet | Crab
Conch | Oyster | Sea urchin | Sea star
Open ocean. Open oceans are marine deserts but the biggest fish and sea mammals live here. They travel long distances in search of food.
VOCABULARY | KILLER WHALE | SWORD FISH | WHALE | SHARK
TUNA FISH | HAKE | SALMON
Coral reefs are warm, clear, shallow ocean habitats that are rich in life. The reef structure is formed from coral polyps. When coral polyps die, they leave a hard branching structure made of limestone. The coral provides shelter for many animals. Coral reefs are the most colourful habitats in the ocean. | CORAL REEFS
animals that live in coral reefs | CLOWN FISH | OCTOPUS | ANEMONE | JELLYFISH | EEL
CORAL | SHRIMP | SEA TURTLE | SEA HORSE | ANGELFISH
DEEP OCEAN | The most important habitats in the ocean depths are hydrothermal vents. Tubeworms are the mostly spread animals in thermal vents. Tubeworms feed from bacteria from the vents.
animals that live in the deep ocean | CRAB | SPONGE | TRIPOD FISH | BRITTLE STAR | ANGLER FISH
TUBEWORM | SQUID | SQUID | HORSESHOE CRAB | SEA CUCUMBER
