Chapter 1 | We meet Kino, his wife (Juana), and his son (Coyotito). They are very poor and Kino's son is stung by a scorpion. Juana attempts to suck out the poison but still wants a doctor's assistance. When they go into town to ask for the doctor, they are rejected becasue they have no money but are told that the doctor is out.
Chapter 2 | Rejected by the Doctor, the family goes out to search for pearls. Juana pray extra hard about finding a pearl because she knows how much Coyotito needs it. Jeana creates a poultice of seaweed for her son's shoulder and observes that it's just as good as the doctor could have done. Then kino notices a special clam while diving and opens it to find a pearl "as perfect as the moon". Amazed, Juana checks Coyotito's shoulder to see that the swelling has gone down.
The small village hears very quickly about the finding of the pearl. Kino Announces what all he will do with it. He plans on doing once unimaginable things such as: buying a rifle, sending his son to school, and marrying Juana. Also, the doctor finally sees Coyotito, treats him, and succeeds at healing the effects of the scorpion sting. Then someone attempts to steal the pearl but is scared away by Kino. | Chapter 3
Chapter 4 | The whole town goes with Kino to sell his pearl. The first buyer offers only 1000 pesos and compares it to fool's gold. After Kino dnies this offer, the buyer calls in three more buyers to convince Kino of the pearl's low worth. The Buyers' plan backfires and Kino defies them by saying that he will go to the capital to get a fair offer. LAter that night, someone tries to steal the pearl again and Juana begs Kino to get rid of it for the second time.
When morning comes, Kino catches Juana attempting to throw the pearl back in the water. After he stopped her, someone attacks him but he kills them instead of giving up the pearl. Juana convinces Kino that they must now run away, but his boat has been destroyed and his house burned. His brother agrees to hide them until night which is when they will leave for the North. | Chapter 5
Chapter 6 | Kino and his familly attempt to save the pearl and escape its evil but end up being chased by trackers. Despite covering their tracks and hiding in the mountains, it still comes down to an encounter between Kino and three men that ends in his son's death. They finally get rid of the pearl and its evil by throwing back into the ocean.
Though the pearl could have solved some of their problems, it actually destroyed them. So, in the end, money isn't everything.
