3: JOHN STEINBECK John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. He enrolled in literature and writing courses at Stanford University, but he dropped out in 1925. He moved to New York City to support himself and work on his first novel, Cup of Gold. Steinbeck moved to Pacific Grove after he was married and and worked on more fictions and short stories. He spent the last three decades of his life with his third wife in New York City. He died in 1968 after winning a Nobel Prize in 1962.
4: setting: la paz, mexico. La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, a mexican state. it is a small bay surrounded by beautiful beaches of white sand. It was first inhabited by Neolithic hunter-gatherers 1,000 years ago. Hernán Cortés first tried to settle the area in 1535, but it was successfully settled by Sebastián Vizcaíno in 1596.
5: the church in la paz. the doctor also lived in this side of town | Kino and juana lived in brush huts with their son coyotito.

8: CHAPTER ONE SUMMARY: KINO wakes up and enjoys the morning. his family is introduced. coyotito gets stung by a scorpion. juana attempts to suck the poison out, but asks for the doctor, only to be disappointed because the doctor will not see them.
9: chapter two summary: kino, juana, and coyotito get into a canoe and go out to search for pearls as a way to pay for the doctor. He goes under water and gathers clams to open, hoping a pearl might be in one. while searching, he finds an oyster bigger than all the rest. Upon opening it, he finds the pearl of the world.
10: chapter three summary: kino plans everything he will do with his new-found pearl. he is visited by the priest. the doctor also comes later to treat coyotito. he eventually cures the scorpion sting. a strange noise in the night provokes kino, and he ends up with with a gash on his head.
11: chapter four summary: the family and many others go into town to see the pearl buyers. they find out that the pearl is worth nothing, but the highest offer is 1500 pesos. kino denies the offer and goes back home. he plans to go to the capital to sell his pearl. kino was bothered by a certain creeping darkness, stepped outside, and ended up being attacked once again. juana wants to get rid of the pearl.
12: chapter five summary: juana takes the pearl and runs to throw it back into the water. in a rage, kino hits her and kicks her after catching her and taking the pearl. while she is down, kino is attacked by two dark figures. juana helps him, and he tells her that he killed them. when they come back to the brush house, it is now on fire. juan tomas agrees to hide the family for a day until they can leave.
13: chapter six summary: the family leaves in the early morning, being sure to cover their tracks. they notice that three trackers are on their trail, so they end up hiding a cave in a mountain. Kino notices the three trackers at the bottom and decides to kill them. As he jumps for them, the man with the gun fires towards the cave. kino kills the three of them, but learns that the gunshot killed coyotito. when the two return, they throw the pearl into the water.
