BC: Moral I believe that the moral of this story is to show readers that no matter how much wealth you have, you will never be fully happy. True happiness comes from your family, and most of all, from yourself.

FC: The Pearl by John Steinbeck

1: Project by Brooke Williams Mrs. Crew 3rd Period November 2, 2010

2: John Steinbeck | John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. Although he attended Sanford University, he never graduated. He then went to New York to try to become a writer, but he failed and returned to California.

4: La Paz | The Doctor's house

5: Kino's house

6: Kino is the father of Coyotito and the husband of Juana. | The beggars stand in front of the church and know everything that is happening in the town.

7: Juana is the mother of Coyotito and wife of Kino.

8: Chapter 1 Summary | In the first paragraph, Kino and Juana wake up after a night's rest and see that a scorpion is crawling up the rope to Coyotito's hanging box. Kino attempts to try to get the scorpion, but he misses. The scorpion falls on the baby and stings him on the shoulder. When Kino finally gets the scorpion, he kills it by smashing it into the ground several times. When they try to take him to the doctor, they are turned away, and Kino becomes very angry.

9: Chapter 2 Summary | After Kino is turned away by the Doctor, he and his wife go to the ocean and begin to search for a pearl. When they find the huge pearl, they say that it is The Pearl of the World. Juana reaches over and removes the poultice from the baby's head, they realize that the swelling is going down.

10: Chapter 3 Summary | The news the Kino has found the Pearl of the World has traveled all through the town. It has all of the townspeople and beggars talking about it. Once it got to the doctor, he came to Kino's house to try to take care of the baby. He tricked them into believing that the baby was very sick. Since Kino and Juana are uneducated, they believe him. Kino also imagines life with all of the money. He sees him and Juana married, and he sees their son well educated. At the end of the chapter, Juana is convinced that the pearl is evil.

11: Chapter 4 Summary | Kino decides to sell the pearl in La Paz. Although when he arrives, the pearl buyers tell him that the pearl is worthless. He decides to go to the Capital to sell his pearl. When kino and Juana are back at their house, they realize someone is there. Kino grabs his knife and runs outside. After a few minutes, Juana goes outside and finds her husband laying on the ground bleeding. She trys to get him to throw the pearl back in the ocean, but he repeats several times that he is a man.

12: Chapter 5 Summary | Kino wakes up and sees Juana Already awake. She leaves, and he follows her. He finds out that she is going to throw the pearl back in the ocean. Kino gets very angry, and runs after her. When he finally gets to her, he hits her in the face. As he is walking back up towards the house, he sees a man, and Kino kills him. As Kino is fighting he drops the pearl, and Juana finds it. As they are walking back, they find their house on fire. Juan keeps their secret, and Kino and Juana plan to leave that night.

13: Chapter 6 Summary | Kino and Juana are heading towards the Capital. They walk all night. They realize three trackers are following them. They decide to head toward the mountains. Kino and Juana hide in a cave. Kino sees the trackers at the bottom,and he tells Juana to keep the baby quite and goes down to kill them. The baby starts crying, and the trackers think that it is a coyote. The tracker aims in the direction of the noise, and shoots the baby in the head. The family is devastated. Kino and Juana finally throw the pearl back into the ocean, and they walk, sadly, back to their home.
