2: About John Steinbeck | John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. He went to Stanford but never finished. He widely became known because of his short, funny stories called Tortilla Flat,

4: S E T T I N G | The setting of The Pearl was in La Paz, Mexico. La Paz is known for its pearl diving.

5: C H A R A C T E R S Kino Juana Coyotito The Doctor

6: C h a p t e r 1 In Chapter one Kino and Juana take their little boy to the doctor because the scorpion stung him. The doctor is really mean and decides not to help them.

7: C h a p t e r 2 In chapter two, Kino and Juana go in the water and start looking for pearls because Kino thinks he can find a pearl then he can sell it and pay the doctor. Luckily, he finds the pearl.

8: C h a p t e r 3 The news got all around the brush houses and the town that Kino found the Pearl. The priest and the doctor all want to help out the family. Juana believes there is evil in the pearl but Kino thinks different.

9: C h a p t e r 4 Kino visits the pearl buyer and he feels like he is not getting the right amount of money for his pearl, Kino also gets attack while searching for bids on his pearl.

10: C h a p t e r 5 Juana still thinks the pearl brings evil so she tried to throw it back on the ocean, Kino gets upset with her and hits and kicks her. Kino gets attacked and winds up killing a man and their house gets burned down, they leave the town.

11: C h a p t e r 6 Because Kino and Juana's brush house burns down they run away to the mountains. The trackers begin to come look for them. Coyotito is killed by being shot in the head. Kino and Juana return back to their city and finally throw the pearl back in the ocean.

12: T H E M E | The Theme or moral to learn from this story is that everything that glitters is not gold. You cant always count on your eyes to lead you in the right direction. You also cant always believe that the good is actually good for you. The best things in life can bring nothing but hurt and danger.
