2: John Steinbeck | No man really knows about other human beings. The best he can do is to suppose that they are like himself -John Steinbeck

3: John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. Steinbeck grew up in a rural area not for from the Pacific Coast. He went to Stanford University in 1919 and enrolled in literature. John left in 1925 without a degree. Within the next five years, Steinbeck became a journalist in New York City. John Steinbeck spent a good portion of his last years of life traveling with his third wife. He won a Nobel Prize in 1962, and then died in 1968.

4: La Paz | La Paz means Our Lady of Peace in English. It was founded by Spanish conquistadors. La Paz is located in Peru. "The Pearl" takes place in the city of La Paz. Kino and his family live in the small brush houses located near the outside of the city near the ocean. The doctor lives in the inner city of La Paz. He has a house covered in bougainvillea.

6: Juana -Juana is the mother of Coyotito, and Kino's girlfriend

7: Kino Kino is the main character in the book. He is the father of Coyotito.

8: The doctor The Doctor is the wealthy and causes Kino and his family trouble throughout the story. He is a coward and refers to Kino's race as "animals." The doctor is Spanish.

9: Coyotito Coyotito is Kino and Juana's baby. He is stung by a scorpion in the beginning of the story.

10: Chapter One In chapter one, Kino and Juana's baby is stung by a scorpion. They take Coyotito to the doctor in the city of Lap Paz. He tells the his servant to tell the couple he is already busy with a more serious case when he really is not. | Chapter Summaries

11: Chapter Two In chapter two, the family of three go pearl hunting in Kino's sacred canoe. Kino finds the "Pearl of the World" and Coyotito is completely healed. They both are excited and imagine a bright future.

12: Chapter Three In chapter three, Kino and Juana go back to the brush house and show their people his pearl. Kino tells everyone Coyotito will go to school and become educated. When word gets around to the doctor that Kino found the pearl, he visits their baby in a heart beat. He tricks them into thinking the baby is progressively getting worse when he is not. Later that night, Kino is attacked, but his pearl is not stolen.

13: Chapter Four In chapter four, Kino takes his pearl in town to the pearl dealers. Him and Juana plan on getting married. Kino is offered 1,500 pesos at the highest price, but it is not enough for him. Kino refuses and heads back home. He is attacked again.

14: Chapter Five In chapter five, Juana steals the pearl from Kino because it is evil and tries to throw it back into the ocean. Kino attacks her and gets the pearl back. He is attacked again and defends himself but ends up killing his attacker. They burn down the brush house and have no choice but to hide. Kino takes his family to his brother for safety.

15: Chapter Six In chapter six, Kino and Juana escape the village and run. They stop and rest, and Kino comes across three trackers. The family runs from them as quickly as they can. They head into the mountains. That night, Kino hides Juana and the baby. He attacks the three trackers while they are resting, but a tragedy occurs. Kino and Juana head back to the village in sorrow over the loss of their son. Kino throws the evil pearl back into the waters where he found it.

16: The moral of this story is to never trust your eyes. Thing are like mirages. They can be seen as miracles when they are actually evil. Some people and objects are not what you expect them to be. For example, a pearl.
