2: John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. Growing up a German immigrant, Steinbeck had a passion for reading. In 1919, Steinbeck graduated from Salinas High School, then attended Stanford University inconsistently until 1925, leaving without a degree. He traveled to New York City pursuing his dream of becoming a writer; he returned to California and worked as a tour guide in 1928. Steinbeck married Carol Henning in 1930; they divorced in 1943. Steinbeck later re- married twice Tortilla Flat was the first novel he published (1935).

3: Steinbeck had two children, Thomas ("Thom") Myles Steinbeck and John Steinbeck IV. | John Steinbeck died in New York City on December 20, 1968. The causes were heart disease and congestive heart failure. He was 66; he had been a life-long smoker. | In 1962, Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize for literature. Some of his most famous writings were: Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, In Dubious Battle, and Travels With Charley

4: La Paz, Mexico On May 3rd, 1535, Hernan Cortez arrived in La Paz; he named it Villa de la Santa Cruz In 1596, Captain Sebastian Vizcaino named the city La Paz, which means 'peace'

5: The weather in La Paz is dry and warm in the summer with temperatures as high as 104 (Fahrenheit).

6: Kino is the father of Coyotito, husband of Juana, and the brother of Juan Tomas

7: Juana is the mother of Coyotito, and the wife of Kino.

8: Coyotito is Juana and Kino's son.

9: This is the doctor who deceived Kino and Juana.

10: Chapter One Kino and Juana are poor Indians. One morning, their son, Coyotito, got stung on the shoulder by a scorpion. Juana sucks out the poison the best he can. Juana calls for the doctor, but he would not come. The family walks to town to see the doctor; he has his servant to say he is not home

11: Chapter Two Kino and his family, along with the other indigent families, go out to the sea. Juana makes a poultice from seaweed to put on Coyotito's shoulder. Kino dived to bottom of the Gulf and grabbed as many oysters as he could. When he opened the largest one, he found the 'pearl of the world'' '.

12: Chapter Three The news of Kino's great find spread quickly through the brush houses. Everyone seems to be happy for Kino. Suddenly, the priest, doctor, beggars, and pearl buyers all become interested in Kino. The doctor comes and gives Coyotito medicine; within an hour, he returns because the baby's condition worsens. In the middle of the night, someone broke into their house; Kino stabbed the person; he gets hit on the head.

13: Chapter Four Kino and Juana go to town to sell the pearl. The pearl buyers tell him the pearl has no value. They offer him 1,000 pesos but he turns it down, Kino says he's going ti the capital to sell his pearl.

14: Chapter Five Juana tries to throw the pearl into the sea. Kino catches her, punches her, and kicks her. Someone attacks Kino, burns down his house, and knocks the pearl from his pocket. Kino kills teh attacker; Juana finds th epearl and returns it to him. Kino's canoe gets broken, and JUan Tomas hides him in his house overnight.

15: Chapter Six Kino, Juana, and Coyotito leave the city at sundown. They took refuge in abandoned woods; Kino realized they were being followed. They headed for the mountains, but the trackers were able to follow them. When they got close enough, they hear Coyotito cry, one of the trackers shoots and kills him. Kino kills the three trackers. Kino and Juana return to the city and throw the pearl into the sea.

16: Theme | In my opinion, the moral of the story is sometimes one can lose sight of whats really important.
