FC: The Pearl by John Steinbeck

3: John Steinbeck | John Steinbeck was born in California in 1902. In 1919 he went to Standford University but left in 1925 with no degree. For the next five years he lived in New York City writing books. He won a Nobel Prize in 1962 but died in 1968.
4: Setting | The story of the pearl took place in La Paz, Mexico in the 1900s. La Paz has been populated for over 12,000 years.

6: Kino | Kino is the husband of Juana and the father of baby Coyotito.
7: Juana | Juana is the wife of Kino. She is also the mother of baby Coyotito.
8: Coyotito | Coyotito is the only son of Kino and Juana.
9: The Pearl Buyers | The pearl buyers are men in the story who looks at Kino's pearl but would not make a reasonable offer.
10: Chapter 1 Summary | New parents Kino and Juana have a baby boy. The baby has been stung by a scorpion. They do not think the baby will live unless he has medical attention. They decide to go see the doctor. Because they are poor and from the brush houses the doctor will not treat the baby. This leaves Kino very frustrated and angry.
11: Chapter 2 Summary | Kino has a boat that was passed down to him from his grandfather. This is what Kino uses to get food and find pearls. Juana prays that Kino finds a pearl large enough to pay for the baby's treatment. Kino finds a pearl as large as a seagull egg. When they find the pearl the baby's swelling goes down.
12: Chapter 3 Summary | The news spreads around the town about the pearl. It gets to the doctor and he then claims that Kino was his client. With the money from the pearl Juana and Kino plan to get married. They receive visits from the preacher and the doctor. The doctor claims that Coyotito is still ill. He gives the baby medicine and then says he is well. The same night, there is an intruder in the hut. Juana begins to believe that the pearl brings evil.
13: Chapter 4 Summary | Kino and Juana go to La Paz to sale the pearl. Although Kino didn't know it, they all worked against him and decided not to buy the pearl and tell him it was worthless. Kino didn't get the offer he was hoping for. They decided to go try and sell it to the capital. Kino is attacked outside of his brush house that night. They do not know the attacker. Juana tells Kino to get rid of the pearl. He is determined to fight it and sell it at the capital.
14: Chapter 5 Summary | The next morning Juana tries to get rid of the pearl. Kino follows and attacks her. Kino gets the pearl and heads back up the beach. He is then assaulted by a group of men. He stabs one man and drops the pearl. Kino later finds the pearl along with Kino and the man he has killed. They hide the body and flee. Someone punches a hole in the boat, and they realize they must walk. At the same time they see that their house is in flames. Everyone suspects they have been killed in the fire, and they leave. Juan Tomas warns him that a search party is being sent.
15: Chapter 6 Summary | Kino and Juana are very careful not to leave tracks. He tells Juana he sees good in the pearl but is actually seeing bad. Soon they spot the trackers. They quickly move away. Juana finds a cave while Kino creates a false trail. The trackers figure out it is false and begin following them. While Juana and Coyotito are asleep in the cave Kino moves towards the sleeping trackers. They are woken up by Coyotito's cries. They think it is a Coyote and shoot at the sound. They kill Coyotito, and Kino kills the trackers. They go back to the village the next day and throw the pearl into the sea.
16: Moral | The moral of the story is that you can never trust your eyes. Kino was fooled by the beauty of the pearl but was later proved that it was full of evil.. Beauty on the outside isn't always beauty on the inside.
