John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. He lived in a valley near the coast and both serve as settings of some of his best fiction. John was a student at Standford University, sad to say he left in 1925 without taking a degree. Throughout his life he published many books, and his first was Cup of Gold published in 1929. In the end John Steinbeck lived a well spent life with his third wife in New York and Sag Harbor.

Chapter One Chapter one was basically introducing Kino and his family. It tells how the people believed in songs. The songs would sometimes tell a feeling or what was fixing to happen. Chapter one also tells of the doctors racism against kino and his people. The doctor refused to help Coyotito after he was stung by the scorpion.
Chapter Two Chapter two was telling about the passing down of the canoe to Kino. It tells how Juana was putting poultice on Coyotito wound. Then it goes into how they went out into the sea to find a pearl to pay for the doctor's services. Then after they found the pearl they Coyotito was healed and they thought it was because of the pearl. When in actuality it was the poultice Juana used.
Chapter Three Chapter three was telling how Kino had become the talk of the village and the town. It was said he had the pearl of the world.Kino also began to hear the music of the pearl, but he also began to hear the song of evil. I also found out that the baby had healed from the poultice in chapter one. Then the doctor came back with a different story saying the baby had a different reaction to the scorpion sting in this chapter. The priest also came because they all want to have the pearl.
Chapter Four Chapter four starts off by telling how nothing is kept secreted in Kino's village. Then it goes into Kino and his family getting ready to go sell the pearl. Once they were dressed in the best clothing they left. When they came to the pearl buyer he basically tried to cheat Kino by giving him less than what the pearl was worth. So Kino basically said he would take his business to the capital. Because Kino knew in his heart the pearl was worth more.
Chapter Five Chapter five starts off Juana stealing the pearl while Kino is supposedly sleeping. She was trying to throw the pearl back into the sea, but Kino ends up catching her and beating her. When I refer to beating her I mean when he hits her in the face and kicks her in the side, and he also hissed at her. Chapter five is also when Kino kills a man and now they are on the run. It is also said that the shadows as they call it has set Kino's house on fire. Kion ends up asking his brother to hide him and his family in his hut. Juan Thomas said yes, the people of the village began sweeping through the ashes looking for their remains. Then at the end Kino, Juana and the baby head north.
Chapter Six Chapter six is when all chaos broke loose. I mean Kino and Juana and the baby are now running from trackers. Since the trackers are chasing them they head for the mountains. While in the night one of the trackers thought it was a baby coyote crying and he shot and killed it, but in actuality it was baby Coyotito. Now all the trackers are dead baby Coytito is dead so Kino throw the pearl back into the sea. The story ends with him and Juana heading home.
