The World in Spatial Terms This element refers to how people, places, and features of the Earth are connected because of where they are. The exact latitude and longitude of a place on Earth is Absolute Location Relative Location describes a place's location based on places near it.
Places and Regions A place is a space on Earth that has meaning to humans. A region is larger than a place, and it is a group of places that are similar. A formal region, is an area defined by a certain feature. A functional region is a central place that is linked to other areas. A perceptual region is an area defined by feelings and images.
Physical Systems Physical systems are things that shape the Earth's surface. Such as Volcanoes Floods Hurricanes
Human Systems People affect the earth in ways such as selling land, creating societies, and moving from place to place, such as the nomads pictured on the opposite page. People also move goods and ideas to new places.
Environment and Society Our environment is effected by people who clear the land, plant forests, build cities, and hunt animals. The environment in the deserts and mountains pose barriers to human migration.
The Uses of Geography Geography is important to our survival. Without geography we wouldn't have any idea where we are right now. Geographers use geography to help us plan for our future needs and for the future of our children.
