BC: THE SNIPER Written by Liam O'Flaherty
FC: The Sniper | Jenna Powell, Hailey Bryant, and Jared Grimm
This story takes place in the 1920's, during the time of a brutal civil war. This war was between the Republicans and the Free Staters. The Republicans wanted all of Ireland to become a Republic, and totally seperated and freed from British rule. The other side was the Free Staters, who had agreed on letting the English continue to stay in charge of the six countries in the northern part of Ulster. This war created conflict between family members, sibling against sibling, and child against parents. When you flip to the next page, you will be put into the middle of this ruthless civil war.
As the sound of firing weapons break the nighttime silence, the sniper patiently waits on the rooftop of a building. He stares into the faded street lights, as he waits for his enemies to arrive.
Keeping his eyes on the road, he notices an old woman walking down the road. She seems a little suspicious.
As the Grandma disappears into the shadows of the buildings, he notices a van driving underneath the flickering street lights.
As the enemies get closer, the old lady reappears. The old lady points up at the Sniper, giving away his position to the Free Staters.
The sniper quickly kills the enemy on the armored van, and then kills the old woman also.
The armored van begins to turn around.
Unfortunately, the sniper gets hit with a bullet. The wound was nothing he couldn't handle, he quickly pours iodine onto the injury. As he looks down, he realized the armored van had escaped.
The sniper realizes the last man left is on the opposite rooftop. The sniper takes action and places his hat on the edge of the rooftop. This tricks the enemy, and causes him to take fire at the hat. The enemy thinks he killed the sniper.
As the enemy begins to leave the area, the sniper takes a shot at him. It seems that the remaining enemy has been killed.
To be positive, the sniper decides to go to the other rooftop to check on the free stater.
When he gets to the rooftop, the man he had killed seems familiar. As he approaches, he realizes that he had killed his own brother.
As you read the beginning of the book, you were told conflicts began between families. In this case, it was brother against brother.
