FC: "The Southwest Indians"

1: Native Americans lived for at least 11,000 years in the Southwest. The Southwest Indians knew the plateaus and deserts well. In the 1500's the Native Americans culture thrived on the land, around them. The area that the Southwest Indians lived includes the current states of Arizona, New Mexico,Utah,and Colorado.

3: Social Structure Chiefs and spiritual leaders made decisions for the village. The Southwest Indians lived in family groups. Each season small groups moved to find food. Navajo and Apache tribes lived in family groups called bands. Apache leaders won the power through battles with other tribes.

4: Homes Southwest tribes made homes of materials they found in nature. People built pueblos from clay and stone bricks. Tribes used mixed clay, straw, and water to make adobe bricks. Apache groups built wick ups and tepees. Some tribes lived on mesas.

6: The Yuma and Pueblo grew corn. Tribes collected cactus fruit. Men hunted deer and rabbits to contain meat. People used river water to irrigate dry places. Americans brought berries and wild vegetables.

9: Some of the Southwest tribes made clothes from animals skins and soft tree bark. In the late 1500s some of the tribes began raising sheep. People made wool blankets to put around their shoulders. People also made sheep's wool into shirts, pants and skirts .The tribes grew,harvested and spun cotton into cloth.

10: Economy Most of Southwest tribes lived on what they gathered, grew and hunted. The tribes traded things they couldn't get in their area. They also traded extra corn for buffalo hides and the deerskin. People shared skills such as farming and weaving

12: Leisure Time Families spent their time playing games.They liked guessing games better.Navajo played moccasin games. Runners used their toes for kicking sticks. The Hopi group played the same game.

14: Traditions Southwest tribes held ceremonies. The tribes thanked earth for their food. They prayed to the spiritual beings for the rain and long fire. Some of the ceremonies celebrated daily life. The Navajo also celebrated the birth of a new baby.
