Hello, I'm Senor Sebastian the Spider Monkey. I am one of the many Endangered Species in the world. On December 28, 1973 the Endangered Species Act was signed by President Nixon, and it was put in place to conserve the species that are endangered or threatened like me, through all or a lot of their area's and the conserving of the ecosystems that we depend on.

So many of my friends of different species are in danger in the world. That's why people want to save us, and so they improved The Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1969 and replaced it with the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The Act has been changed for us several different times.

Sometimes builders come into our habitats and destroy our homes by cutting down trees and such, to provide homes for themselves. Wildfires also burn down our homes. Other animals that produce often take over our homes also. In these cases our habitats are gone and we have no where to live. Our food is even limited sometimes when people come into our habitats and do these things to us.

For years animals have been threatened, invaded, and harmed. In the United States 614 animal species just like mine, are listed on the endangered species list. And 749 United States plant species are listed on the endangered species list.

Let me introduce you to some of my friends that are endangered. There's Gary the grizzly bear, Sally the Stellar Sea-Lion, Ruth the Rufous Hummingbird, Marcella the Mexican Gray Wolf, Alex the African Elephant, and Paulie the Polar Bear. They are just six of the hundreds of endangered species!

My friends and I are happy to be protected because we know that, with the Endangered Species Act, people are more careful and considerate when using our habitats for building purposes. See with the Endangered Species Act in effect, all over the world, there has been an improvement in a number of mammal and bird species which were very endangered.

My endangered friends and I are located all over the world. But there are 614 animal species and 749 plant species that are endangered, just in the United States! Plus, 17 animal species and 46 plant species are currently proposed to be listed on the Endangered Species List! And guess what?! There are even more! 140 animal species and 110 plant species are candidates for being listed! That's a lot of my friends that are in danger.

There are a lot of people in the world though, that get mad at my endangered friends and I. They get mad because having the Endangered Species Act in place, it cuts down on economic development and performance for them. It decreases the availability of land that builders, contractors, and people in general can use. Farmers, ranchers, and loggers are all being pressured into cutting down on land because of the rules in the Act.

If you want to help save my friends and I, here are some things you can do! When your friends and family want to go out hunting, you should make sure that what they are hunting is legal and it is in right season, and that they know the hunting restrictions. You can also make sure that if you see that there are animals or a living habitat on a construction site, you can call someone who would be able to save those animals before they are harmed or even worse killed.

To help keep us safe, humans also sometimes transport and trade species to better habitats that suit them the best. Local laws made by your state government also work to keep us safe too. Some of my friends even have a special Act just for their particular species.

Thanks for traveling through the Endangered Land with me!
