The development of these competencies is fundamental to normal human learning. When developed, they enable a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visible actions, objects, symbols, natural or man-made, that he encounters in his environment. Through the creative use of these competencies, he is able to communicate with others. 20: Comprehending Images: a two-step process | Visual Encoding | Expressing thoughts and ideas in visual form | Visual Decoding | Translating and understanding the meaning of visual imagery | Teachers can help foster these processes by teaching students how to ask questions, collaborate with others, analyze concepts of print, and think outside of the box.
21: Essentially, visual literacy comprehension is the ability to use visual literacy as a means of communication, or encoding. It is also the ability to make meaning from images and interpret their message, or decoding.
