2: On May 18, 1980 scientists discovered that Mount St. Helens, in Washington state, had erupted. Mount St. Helens killed 57 people, and thousands of animals . Also Mount St. Helens hurt a lot of people by giving burns to the skin. The burns that the people got were like burns from ash in a fire . | This is a picture of Mount St. Helens a couple days before it erupted.
3: When Mount St. Helens erupted, it was like if you took a bomb and stuck it right beside a person. Some people say they can not forgot that terrible sound of boom in their ear coming from Mount St. Helens. | This is a picture of Mount St. Helens erupting.
4: One way that a volcano forms is when there is a crack in the Earth. Another way a volcano forms is when magma builds up and finally explodes. Also the volcanoes have smoke and other molten rocks build up inside and erupts and kills thousands of people. | This is a drawing of whenever the lava is building up inside a volcano.
5: The next way a volcano can form is whenever the top of the volcano can not hold any more lava or it just oozes out of the sides. | This is a computerized photograph of what is happening inside a volcano while it is forming.
6: Volcanoes have been around for so many years. Sometimes volcanoes make big explosions out of the top but other times volcanoes just ooze out of the side. Also volcanoes can have lava spark out of the top. | This is a picture of when a volcano has lava sparking out of the top.
7: Did you know that volcanoes can be made up of many different islands? Hawaii is one of those islands. Hawaii has most of the world's volcanoes. Also some may occur in mountainous areas. People think that volcanoes are mountains. | This is a picture of one of the volcano's that is on the land Hawaii.
8: One thing that is inside a volcano is lava. Lava is hot liquid that flows down a volcano like melted wax dripping from a candle. | This is a picture of lava coming from hot melted rock.
9: Lava is also called magma. The way it comes out is when it builds up for a while and erupts. Most of the time it comes out the sides. Also magma is kept in a magma chamber. | This is a photo of magma inside a Magma Chamber. | Magma Chamber: A magma chamber is an underground cavity that contains magma often usually located under the volcano.
10: One type of of a volcano is an extinct volcano. Another type of volcano is a geyser. The next kind is a shield volcano. | Extinct volcano: An extinct volcano is a volcano that can no longer erupt. | Geyser: A geyser is a spring that throws a jet of hot water. | Shield volcano: A shield volcano is a low flat volcano that is really low to the ground.
11: One way you can prepare for a volcano is that you will need a fire extinguisher. Another thing you might need is a couple cases of water. You need a backpack of canned goods and a can opener and a blow up mattress.
