FC: We Salute Famous Women Inventors

1: To celebrate Women's History Month, our 6th grade computer literacy class researched famous women inventors. We hope you will enjoy our book and learn something as well!

2: Mary Anderson Windshield Wipers 1903

3: She noticed people had to constantly get out of their car to clean their windshield. She made a sketch and used mechanical pieces to activate it from the inside. Then she hired a designer for the windshield that was hand operated. Her goal was to improve driver vision during terrible weather. Cleans snow, rain, hail, and sleet. It prevents the windshield from fogging up and prevents car accidents.

4: Marion Donovan invented disposable diapers. | Marion hated changing her child’s wet diapers & bed sheets. She decided to make a diaper cover to keep her baby dry. Marion was sitting at her sewing table and after a few attempts she created a water proof diaper. The Diaper did not cause rashes and it didn’t pinch the child’s skin. Later, she added snap fasteners the keep the diaper in place. Lastly, she named the diaper cover the “Boater”

5: The diaper is strong and absorbent. It keeps water away from the baby’s skin. Also, it keeps the bed sheets clean, the baby clean, and the clothes clean. It snaps on so the baby doesn’t have the diaper fall off. Finally, the diaper keeps the baby dry.

7: Rachel Zimmerman invented the Bliss Symbols. She was only 12 years old when she invented this. She invented this so people who have troubling communicating. | . 8: Ruth Handler Inventor of the Barbie Doll in 1959

9: Ruth Handler watched her daughter play with paper dolls which now are Barbie Dolls. Ruth Handler would watch her daughter and her daughter’s friends use the dolls to act out their future. Ruth wanted to make plastic dolls that every kid could use to act out their future. Handler named the Barbie doll after her daughter’s name which is Barbara and she also made a male version named Ken after her son. She soon premiered the doll at the Toy Fair and the Barbie doll soon became a hit sensation.

12: Ruth Wakefield Chocolate Chip Cookies, (Toll House Crunch Cookies) 1930

13: In 1930 she was mixing cookies for her roadside inn guests when she found out she didn’t have any bakers chocolate. Because she didn’t have any bakers chocolate she used broken pieces of nestle semi-sweet chocolate, expecting it to melt into the cookies. When she removed the cookies from the oven, she had realized that she had accidentally invented “Chocolate Chip Cookies.” She called her creation “Toll House Crunch Cookies.”

14: Dr. Grace Murray Hopper invented the COBOL Computer Language. She was born on December 9, 1906 in New York City. She studied Mathematics at Yale and was married in 1930. Hopper served in the Navy in World War II .

15: She was the Director of automatic programming in 1952 and lead the team that invented COBOL in 1961. It was the only and first easy to use business omputer software. Grace won many awards for being a woman inventor. She died on January 1,1992.

16: V | Patricia Billings invented Geobond in the 1970’s. It holds together materials and is used in construction.

17: It is fire-proof, non-toxic, and indestructible. She wanted to invent a cement additive to stop her sculptures from shattering (She was an artist). She invented this after years of experiments in her basement.

18: Secret Communications System 1941 Hedy Lamarr

19: Hedy Lamarr Secret communications system 1941 | It was used for to help combat the Nazis in the World War By manipulating radio frequencies at irregular intervals between transmission and reception. The invention formed an unbreakable code that prevented any messages from being intercepted by enemy personnel. Lamarr and Anthiel received a patent in 1941.The invention was not realized until decades later.Hedy and George later got the EFF pioneer award. It help people by communication with allies and keeps Nazis from stealing information .

20: Animal Handling Inventions, born on August 29, 1947 The invention is used to train animals (mostly farm animals) from getting hurt by keeping them calm. Her center-track restraint system is being used to handle nearly half of all the cattle in North America.For example Dr. Temple Grandin’s scoring system is used to calm animals such as cows and pigs at the meat plants so they don’t freak out and the workers can handle them easily.

21: Dr. Temple Grandin had autism. Her social stigmas have helped her think that animals should not be mistreated or underestimated. She learned to use features of her autism to stimulate her work as an inventor. Dr. Temple Grandin is a special inventor because she was able to make inventions while living with autism.
