That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.” Matthew 13:1-9

 The Toast

It’s time to toast to Don and Jeannette’s fifty years of marriage. Please go ahead and find your glass as we take a moment with some words of celebration. As you do that, I will let you know I am Doug Kurtz and I married Valerie, Don and Jeannette’s youngest daughter, 13 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this family for nearly two decades. There is a lot to toast in celebrating Don and Jeannette’s 50 years of marriage. We all know that life with them is truly a blessing. When we need wise counsel, we call on Don and Jeannette. When we need encouragement, they are there for us. When we have a crisis, we call them yet again. It’s a wonder they keep taking our calls! Woody Allen says that “90% of life is just showing up” and we know that Don and Jeannette have that aced. Chances are they have been to your wedding, your graduation, and your birth! You may know them as friends, mentors, ministers, aunt & uncle, grandparents, or godparents. And some of you call them ‘Mom’ or ‘Dad’ in hopes they’ll adopt you too! Or maybe you just stopped by to live with them for a few months! There’s so many of us in the family tree, the branches are simply sagging. And Jeannette finally drew the line, in one of her famous phrases saying, “I am not that dog’s mother!” They are our travel partners in life, sharing with us camping and cruises and time shares. From life-changing Marriage Encounter weekends to card games to wine tasting, from Lemon Grove to Lake Millerton, and Sylmar to Saipan, our most enduring and precious memories have been shaped by – and with - Don and Jeannette. Which begs the question when were they ever home?! But of course they were home, because we crashed their house for Thanksgivings and Easters and Christmases. We did stop-bys for summer vacations and cocktail parties. They’ve welcomed our RVs and our kids, and our dogs and our cats and our friends and our friends’ friends. They are not just hospitable, they are downright generous – and loving, fun and funny, smart and helpful, faithful and trustworthy. For us, their marriage has been a huge blessing and a true testimony of the goodness and faithfulness of God present in their lives. As for Don and Jeannette it has been a love story. It has been 50 captivating years. Who knew that a 22 year old college kid and an 18 year old sweetheart could find such a true and enduring love? They’ve come a long way from those university days, but their love stays strong. We get glimpses of it – as they look into each other’s eyes or hold hands or dance cheek to cheek. It’s an enchanting romance, the stuff movies are made of, and the kind of love that inspires us. And that’s why it’s such a treat for us to celebrate them. So please join with me in toasting to Don and Jeannette, and in celebrating their 50 years of love. Cheers to you and we love you!

It was pretty rough in the beginning, but somehow it came together! Our running joke was that whenever one of us was in danger of humming or singing the melody in your presence, we would immediately break into "Runaround Sue," which was code for "'Cheek to Cheek ' is stuck in my head again!" 30: Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I probably couldn't count the number of times you've been told your marriage is an inspiration. This is certainly true for me but it may mean more if I could explain what that means to me personally. I tell my friends all the time about the amazing times I've had at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Whether I was causing trouble with my cousins or learning to water ski, my grandparents were a big part of my childhood. If you hadn't been together, there would be no mischief making in the yard and Grandma wouldn't have been in the water with me explaining how to ski while Grandpa drove the boat. I was so spoiled because of your love. Thinking about you individually, there are few people I know who are as clever, loyal, and determined as my grandfather. I know that like any couple, sometimes the two of you fight, but Grandpa was always willing to bend, grow, and work towards being a good husband. I tell my best girl friends that if and when they decide to get married, I hope they are lucky enough to end up with someone like my grandpa. I think that if a woman wants a man who will treasure them forever and treat them as the greatest treasure in their life, then they're too late because my grandpa is already married to my grandma. My grandmother of course, was just as loyal and intelligent, but when I think of my grandma individually, I think of simply love. She is always there for everyone and was lucky enough to be supported by my grandfather's love to keep doing so. There are few people in the world who are so selfless, but everyone has their rock. Could Grandma have dedicated so much time to her community, to children, and to her children and grandchildren without the stable support of her partner? Maybe, but certainly not as well. You are a great pair. Salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, Sonny and Cher...oh wait, maybe not them. I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, my grandparents you'll be. Love, Alana Banana | The Legacy | Dear Grandma and Grandpa, Thank you for showing me what a wonderful, healthy marriage looks like. I aspire to have a married life like yours. Thank you also for being such loving, generous people. I love you both so much and feel blessed to have such wonderful grandparents. Love, Suzanne

notes from your grandchildren | Grandma and Grandpa, When I came into this world, I had no idea how blessed I was to have two wonderful grandparents. I love you two not just because you've supported me all these years. I love you for who you are. Whenever I asked for comfort for either feeling sad or being sick, you were there. Whenever I was promised something and it wasn't given to me (a.k.a. no car from dad), you were there. I've always felt sad whenever I wasn't there with you two and the rest of the family. Yet every time I come to visit, it's as if I never left. You two are special in your own ways. Grandpa is the handyman and has a head full of knowledge, giving his son and daughters as well as his grandchildren advice. Grandma is the same the same way, minus the handyman part. Both of you are sweet, caring, and know how to treat people with love. Together both of you make a unique and wonderful chemistry. With that you have shown your selflessness to everyone you know for 50 years. But it doesn't matter how long you've shown love and care for others. What matters is that you continue to show selflessness together. In the 20 years I have known you two, you've become the grandparents I've always wanted. You are very special to my heart and I love you for being my grandparents. Love, Matthew | Grandma + Grandpa, I love you guys sooo much. you have led me through the years and have taught me so many things. You are kind and loving, generous and awesome, and you're my grandparents. I love you, Paul **Incredible**

Dear Grandma and Grandpa, I had a lot of fun at your party. You are special to me because you are nice. I love it when you come and visit me. We play, play, play. We play games and read books together. I like going to your house because it's really fun. One of the rooms on the bottom floor has a window that's on the roof! I love to watch PBS Sprout and play on your trampoline and swim in your pool and take Molly for walks in the forest with Grandma. Grandma is really, really generous because she always brings presents to me every time she comes to my house. And I like to play games with Grandpa. I love you and happy anniversary. Love, Brady | Grandma & Grandpa, I love having you near me. Your gentleness and sweet words always bring me joy and comfort. Thank you for taking care of me and loving me so selflessly. I know that you love me just the way I am, and you are a gift from God.! Love, Kelsey

Dear Grandma and Grandpa, You are special to me because you have always been there for me as I was growing up, taking care of me, going camping, going out on the lake, and always doing things even if you didn't want to. There are a lot more reasons also, but I love you, Grandma and Grandpa. Hayden Donald Boltz | Hey, Grandma and Grandpa, I enjoyed your 50th very much! :) Thanks for the great years and helping me succeed to be the person I am today. Love you! From Hanz Dagen Boltz
