BC: "I am not only still dreaming, I am living my dreams." | Earnest Shakleton
We drove to St. George, Utah, to meet our friends from Germany. Stefan participated in the Ironman race. Claudia, Dale and Bonnie cheered him on! Their picture is taken in front of a waterfall at Zion Nat'l Park. | Claudia did the "Ironhorse", rather than the "Ironman"!!
Stefan registered on Wednesday, 3 days before the race. He got his number, 1830 stenciled on his upper arm, and his age on the back of his leg. The races were done in age catagories.
The race starts with the lead car and motorcycles. The motorcycles will monitor the racers and help them in any way if they need it. | Stefan has already swam 2 1/2 mi. and has pedaled many miles by the time he reached this spot. Drinks and snacks are handed out along the way for a quick grab on the move.
Stefan coming down the homestretch on his bike | About to round the corner | Rounds the corner and goes up the homestretch... | And he's finished the biking part ! | 110 miles!!
Coming down from the bike-in back up the street on the lane opposite the cyclists. 26+ miles on this run, the length of a marathon! | Go stefan !!
This is the start of the 2nd loop of the run. Stefan has a lot of pain in his side from a previous injury from a bike accident. His feet are painful, but...he goes on, another 13 miles to go! | He can do it ! | One other man fell and broke his collarbone, and walked the 26 miles !
Stefan crossed the finish line in 13 hrs. and 40 min.! Many of the racers said that this course was a very difficult one because of the hills. | Photo being taken | Holding up his Ironman finisher medallion
The Ironman included handicapped people. This man had a special prosthesis for running.
Stefan with Claudia after the race. He received a hat and shirt at the finish line. There was a banquet in honor of the finishers. The winner of the professional division was awarded $10,000, and will be able to go to Kona, HI to participate in the World Championship.
