FC: My Laparoscopic Ureteronephrectomy: The Story of My Little Kidney & Long Ureter
Hi, I'm Padraig. This is me on my 2nd birthday. When I was 2, a lot of fun things happened and I got to do many new things. I'm going to tell you about something that happened that wasn't so fun... The story of My Little Kidney & Long Ureter.
When I was a baby, I was usually having a really good time. | I spent lots of time with mom and dad, and my brothers loved to play with me.
But sometimes when I was feeling good, I would suddenly get sick. I would get a fever & vomit...and this made me cry,
But being sick didn't bother me that often. I continued to grow & spent most of the time playing fun games.
A few days before Thanksgiving 2010, I went to a really fun birthday party & got to dress up like Superman. I started to feel sick at the party.
On Thanksgiving, I woke up from my nap with a high fever & vomitted. I didn't even want to have any yummy food that day, and I spent a lot of time sleeping. | Luckily, my whole family was spending the day at our house, so my grandparents all took turns helping mon & dad take really good care of me.
Even though everyone was taking good care of me, my fever got worse, and I kept vomitting. When my mom changed my diaper there wasn't very much urine & the little bit that was there had blood in it. I had to go to the hospital to find out why I was so sick.
As it turned out, I had a urinary tract infection (UTI). That explained why I was feeling so awful.
The doctor at the hospital said that I needed some medicine for my infection & that I should see my pediatrician in a few days to see how I was feeling. | The medicine helped me feel better pretty quickly. But even though I was feeling better, my parents knew that I needed to visit with my regular doctor. | So that's what we did...
My pediatrician, Dr. Juan Ferreris, said that I needed to get some tests done to see why I got a UTI. | He told us that boys my age don't usually get UTI's unless there is something wrong inside their body.
I had different kinds of tests & had to go to the hospital to get them done. There were a lot of nice people that explained the tests to me & my parents. And, I got to meet different kinds of doctors like a radiologist, urologist & a nephrologist. All of them did tests that looked inside my body to find out what was going wrong with my urinary tract. | One day that I visited the hospital for a test, my parents & I got to take a picture with Santa Claus. That was more fun than the test.
What the tests showed is that my right kidney was very little...and not working very well. It was shrinking because it kept getting infected & would keep making me sick. My right ureter was also much longer and fatter than it should be. The doctors we talked to all said the same thing: THEY HAVE TO COME OUT. My parents took me to meet Dr. Frank Robertson. He was the doctor that would take out my little kidney & long ureter. He's one of the best surgeons for the type of surgery I needed: a laparoscopic ureteronephrectomy (taking out a ureter and kidney).
On February 28, 2011, I went to the Methodist Children's Hospital to have my surgery.
I was given special medicines that would make me sleep & not feel or remember anything during the surgery. | When I woke up I was pretty grouchy & just wanted to sleep.
My tummy was hurting a lot when I woke up from all of my napping. To try to cheer me up, the nurses brought me JELL-O & ice cream. I wasn't very hungry though.
After a few hours, I was feeling a little bit better. I got a new stuffed animal & the nurses said I could go to the playroom. My tummy was still hurting from my surgery, so my dad & mom helped me walk down the hall, so I could play. I still had an IV in my hand that was giving me medicine, so I had to be very careful with it.
I had a lot of fun in the surgical ward playroom. They had great toys.
I got to spend the night in the hospital & the next morning had a yummy pancake breakfast. I was very hungry. | Even though my tummy hurt a lot & it made me cry, I was very happy when the doctor said that I could go home.
When I got home, I was so happy to see my brothers & all of my toys. Every day that went by, I felt a little better. After a couple of weeks, I was back to my usual self, running & playing all over the house.
Looking at me now, you'd never know that I only have one kidney & ureter. I can do all the same things I did before & will be a healthy guy my whole life with just my one kidney.
