First, I would like to thank everyone for coming today, I would also like to thank the troop and my family for the support that helped me towards receiving my Eagle Scout Rank. I would also like to thank Martha Lloyd and the maintenance staff for the support and the materials for the project | J.R.'s Eagle Speech
There were many things that I learned through the years in Scouting like leadership, responsibility and patience that will help me throughout my life. | I have done the communications and public speaking merit badges; they have helped me speak in front of people and be more comfortable, even though I do get nervous still; I do feel better.
Some of the highlights that I had throughout my scouting are that I enjoyed the hikes and camping; the most enjoyable of these are going to new places like the Ithaca Gorges and to Virginia, visiting Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Another highlight was doing and completing the climbing merit badge and the C.O.P.E course, both I had to face a big fear of mine which is heights and ended up doing very well, even though I am more comfortable about heights; I still do not like heights.
Community service has always been a great experience, doing can drives for the local pantries, marched in many parades, mostly the Memorial Day Parades which is great to participate in every year, I have helped with ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. During the summer I have helped the local garden club by watering the flowers that are hung around downtown Troy.
My project that is right here is a sitting garden that was made for the clients of Martha Lloyd along with the staff can enjoy the outdoors and can relax and those who are in wheelchairs can even enjoy the outdoors and relax. the project itself was quite challenging because of the plot of land was very uneven and on a slope, because the slope has a 14 inch difference from the top of the plot to the bottom of it.
Elmo loves to see Boy Scouts doing Eagle projects
The original material to be used was going to be gravel as a base that needed to be roughly 5 inches and the sand layer on top of that would need to be roughly 3 to 4 inches; instead we used around 3 inches of crusher stone dust. The biggest problem would have been the sidewalk, running pavers all the way up along with the sidewalk; then slowly level off so there would be no problems of clients getting hurt. I would like thankGuire Webb who helped tremendously by making the project much simpler by making the entrance of the sitting garden narrower by making it about 8 feet wide because of that it made the work much easier that running the entire 20 plus feet of sidewalk and the open gaps can be used for flower beds.
