Adoption Portfolio - Page Text Content

FC: Jennifer and Kevin

We were married in 2007 and anxious to start a family. When things didn't work out, we decided adoption was the best route for us. Many of our friends have adopted domestically and internationally. We are anxious to enjoy the little things with our child. Reading bedtime stories, catching fireflies, making s'mores, and making dinner together are just some of the experiences we want to make a part of our routine. We believe it is important to do things together as a family and enjoy the simple things. We both have fond memories of our childhood and how we were raised. Our parents didn't just do everything for us or buy us everything we wanted. They played games with us, cooked with us, took us camping and fishing, and taught us the value of family and friends.

Home is where we plan to nurture our children and help them grow - whether it is eating a family dinner, doing homework at the dinner table, or spending quality time as a family in the living room.

so many | As you can tell from our pictures we like to have a good time enjoying life and being together. | Kevin likes sports, Jenn isn't such a fan, but does enjoy going to some of the games. We like to bowl, putter golf, and even check out museums or some of the historical places in new areas we visit. We usually go to Greenfield Village once or twice every summer as it is close to home and something fun for our friends and their kids to check out.

LIVE WELL LAUGH OFTEN LOVE MUCH

Kevin is a chef. He went to school for culinary arts and loves to cook for large groups of family and friends, and they all really appreciate it. Don't be fooled though, everything he makes is tasty, but not always fancy. While it is difficult to get Kevin to eat his veggies, he does make a well rounded meal. Our friends often tease us because we both enjoy some crazy dishes, but they are seldom the same. So be assured many new meals are definitely on the menu.

Jennifer has worked in the auto industry her entire career. Most often purchasing, but has worked in accounting, human resources and development of new business. She works for a family owned company servicing General Motors through out the Northwest. | Jennifer also sells Tastefully Simple, a home based direct selling product. She enjoys getting out and meeting new people, while promoting a product she likes.

Kevin was born and raised in Westland, where his mom still resides after his dad passed away in 2004. As an only child Kevin traveled quite a bit with his parents. He has been to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, Disney World and even white water rafting. | Kevin is an Eagle Scout and a Scout leader. He is also a certified Scuba diver and certified lifeguard and lifeguard instructor. .

Jennifer likes to scrapbook, quilt, cook and craft. She was also a mentor with the Big Brother/Big Sister program. | Jennifer grew up in a small town. Her goal was to graduate college and move to a more metropolitan area. She moved to the Detroit area in 2005. Her parents still live in northern Michigan, as do her brother and sister. Her brother has three children and one grandchild. | Jenn's first quilt.

Many of our vacations revolve around the water. We like to snorkel, swim, and canoe. Hopefully these are some activities we can also do as a family. We like to travel to new places and explore. We have been to a few international places, but we are just as happy to camp up north or go downtown for the night.

We have rescued a cat and a dog. Chloe loves everyone. She likes to play in the yard with other dogs and kids.

Riley is a little more particular about who gets to see and play with him. He loves to wrestle with Chloe, but normally likes to nap and hide.

Some of our friends and family are up north, so we often meet in Frankenmuth,go camping together, meet up at the zoo or a sporting event. Our friends are all over the world actually now. We have friends in Mexico, Japan and here in Michigan and Ohio. No matter who we see or talk too, it is always refreshing. In today's day and age we might not be able to see everyone every day, but we still keep in touch often and they are important people in our lives. | "The friends we meet on the path of life make the trip worth while."

Sometimes when we get together with our friends it will be for a few days at a time. Maybe a girl's weekend of crafting or shopping. Maybe it is to help with a project or welcome another little one and help mom get back on her feet. We like to do things with the kids when we get a chance also. We have taken them to the circus, zoo, made cookies, and done crafts.

Kevin is helping the kids build a gingerbread train.

"Families are like fudge ... mostly sweet with a few nuts." | We try to get together with family often and spend our holidays with them. Jenn's parents go south for the winter, and we sometimes visit them there, but we spend alot of weekends together the rest of the year. Kevin's mom live just a few miles away and we get together often.

 MAKING MEMORIES

t | To be perfectly honest, we aren't perfect people, we are good people, who would love to have some kids to raise. We are going through the adoption process and also going through the foster parent process. The laws to foster are even stricter, even tougher than they are to adopt. We have been vehicle inspected, home inspected, medically tested, referenced checked, and fingerprinted. While every adoptive, birth or foster parent should have to go through all of those checks, the most important part of the process was the training we received. Part of the foster parent process is 32 hours of training on how to be a foster parent/parent. This training really helped us understand even more things about kids and what is important and necessary for them to be healthy and happy. We will encourage our children to learn how to love and respect their family, community and friends. We hope to teach them the most important things in life aren't bought with money. We were both raised in families where you did things with your family and friends, where you learned to do things for others and feel good about it, where we learned the value of enjoying life every chance you have, not just on special moments, trips, or holidays.

We try to live green and think it is important that we do our part and teach our child to do the same. We recycle, buy reusable products whenever possible and try to conserve gas and energy. We feel that if we are going to raise a child it is important to be greener, so that a child has a good environment to live in. We are open to having an open adoption, we intend to ensure any child we raise knows that they were a gift given to us. After going through the foster parent process we think it is pretty important to be honest with kids and let them be honest with us. It is okay for them to have feelings and to express them, hopefully in a positive way. We also intend to to help them understand that their mom gave them to us, because she loved them more than herself. We have the utmost respect for anyone who makes that decision. | We can't promise you we will be perfect parents;, but we do promise to love your child with our whole hearts and help them to be a great person.
