FC: Five Generations of the Charles & Katie Kohn Family | 1914 | 1964

1: ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS | You may wonder where and how I was able to find all these pictures....I borrowed and used selected pictures from the collections of Aunt Helen, Joe & Mary, Aunt Cathy, Aunt Rosie, my Mom (Aunt Eleanor), Aunt Yvonne, Grandma, Uncle Chuck & Uncle Bob...I badgered and pestered quite a few cousins for additional pictures or name and date info on old photos, notably Ann, Joan, Mary Anne, Connie, Pam, Tim, Peggy, Lyn, Dan, Joe, Mary, Sarah, Sunny, Val, Margie, John, Kaitlyn, Stacey, Kathleen, Matt, Candice, Melodi & Sierra. I'm also thankful that many relatives post pictures on Facebook - a real bonanza for me! And many, many thanks to Aunt Mary whose stories about her siblings were an awesome resource for me to tell the story of Charles, Katie and their children as a chronologically ordered narrative. I am so thankful that she had the foresight that someday future generations would want to know the history of her (our) ancestors. | The second generation (my aunts & uncles) are identified by just their first names - no disrespect meant, just saving space. In the 1980s, I tapered off identifying each person in a picture if they were all 2nd or 3rd generation so that I could concentrate on naming the 4th & 5th generations. I've used the name that is the most commonly used name for each person. The fourth and fifth generation listings on pages 9 and 10 include step relationships (only as requested)...because, for us, it's all family. | Donna Kohn Armanino October 16, 2012 | And special thanks to Giovanna (and James who brought her into our family), who volunteered to proofread the whole book ...although she didn't know the size of the project when she volunteered! But she followed through anyway. Then after she was done, I made more changes so any errors that remain are mine. | TABLE OF CONTENTS | 1st generation ... page 3 Family Tree ... Page 4 Ancestors ... Of course, some families are larger and so have more pictures. My goal was to have at least one picture of each descendant ... unfortunately, I fell short on a few, but the majority are represented. | The book ends with pictures from the Family Picnic held October 6, 2012...98 years after the marriage of Charles & Katie. We can all be proud to be a part of their legacy, and eager to carry it forward for the next generations. And it goes on...today there are four more great, great grandchildren due to arrive in 2013!

2: The Kohn Coat of Arms hereby illustrated is officially documented in RIETSTAP ARMORIAL GENERAL. The original description of the arms (shield) is as follows: “Ec.: aux 1 et 4 d’or au lion de sa., lamp. Et allume de gu., celui du 1 cont.: aux 2 et 3 d’azure a un palmier d’or, mouv. de la p.” When translated, the blazon also describes the original colors of the Kohn arms as: “Quartered: 1 and 4 Gold, a black lion with red tongue and eyes; the one in the first quarter is turned to the left; 2 and 3 blue, a gold palm tree issuing from the base”. Above the shield and helmet is the crest, which is described as “The Lion of the First Quarter Issuing.” | Note from Donna: Below is a picture of an embroidered rendition of the Kohn Coat of Arms I purchased at a heraldry shop in Solvang CA in 1985 for my parents. However, I've not been able to verify its authenticity, nor to find the significance of the 1659 date at the bottom.

3: Charles Joseph and Katie Gertrued (Nelson) Kohn married June 17, 1914 St Mary's Catholic Church, Ellsworth MN | Jim Keenen (a friend & neighbor) & Agnes Kohn (groom's sister) were witnesses. | FAMILY STORY (a very abbreviated version) Katie was very bright...so much so that her father allowed her to attend high school (a rare privilege for girls at the time). After graduating, she taught in one room schools until her marriage. Katie became Catholic to marry Charles. She chose Catherine as a baptismal name and used it for the rest of her life...but she was always Katie to Charles. They met during her second teaching job near Luverne MN. She boarded at the home of John, Philetta & Margaret Kohn (Charles’ brother, sister-in-law and sister). Shy, naive Katie didn’t notice Charles’ interest was piqued, even though he visited the home often. Finally, he asked his sister to tell Katie that he was coming that night and bringing the Sears Roebuck catalog. Katie excused herself to go to bed soon after his arrival. The next morning Charles was at the gate chopping wood and Katie had to pass him to get to her school. He chided her, saying, “Here I come to see you and you go off to bed”. And that is how it all began. On their first wedding anniversary, Helen was born. Bernard followed in 1916, Marge in 1918, twins Dolores & Doris in 1919 (Dolores died in 1920), and Patricia Caroline lived for just one day in 1921. Ed was born in 1923, Cathy in 1924, Yvonne in 1926, Mary in 1928 and Pat in 1929, and finally stillborn Theresa in 1931. You get a sense of their lives if you reflect that there were 11 pregnancies during the first 17 years of their marriage (raised 9 children to adulthood)...and there were 39 grandchildren born over a 30 year period beginning in their 25th year of marriage (1939-1969). The Kohn family lived in Luverne and Ellsworth, MN until the early 1940s. Helen began the westward move in the mid 1930s when she moved to Santa Barbara CA. She was followed shortly by Marge & Doris. In 1938, Marge returned to MN to marry Carlos, but they lived in Santa Barbara until Carlos' death in 1940. Bernard joined the Army in 1941. Helen, Marge & Doris moved north to work in the shipyards of Vallejo CA in 1942. Charles joined them later that year. Katie, Cathy, Yvonne, Mary & Pat arrived in June 1943, while Ed became a sailor in August that year. In 1944, Doris married in Vallejo, and Bernard wed in 1945. In 1946, Charles, Katie, Mary & Pat joined Marge & Helen in Santa Barbara. Cathy & Yvonne moved to San Francisco where they had found jobs (and hubbies, too!). Weddings followed in quick succession: Pat and Ed in 1948, Helen & Cathy in 1949, Yvonne in 1950 and Mary & Marge in 1951. | Page 3

Helen, Marge & Bernard were probably working away from the family farm at this time. | Family pictures taken about Oct. 25, 1938 when Marge married Carlos Streeter in MN. These are the earliest pictures of the entire family. | 1930s | Pat, Mary, Cathy, Yvonne, Doris & G'ma, ca 1937 ` | Ed & Cathy, ca 1926 (ages 4 and 2) | R.I.P. Patricia 1921 | R.I.P. 13: Marge & Carlos Streeter October 25, 1938 | Helen was the pioneer, arriving in CA about 1936. She was working at the Mayo Clinic in MN, and a patient brought her to Santa Barbara as his private duty nurse. Marge followed shortly after and Doris joined them a year or so later. All three found various personal service jobs. Bernard came in 1939, finding work with a construction company. He had been working in MN as a farm hand after his year of CCC service ended in 1936. The 1940 census confirms that Carlos, Marge, Joe, Bernard, Helen & Doris lived in Santa Barbara while the rest of the family was still living in Ellsworth. | Helen | Marge | Doris | Bernard | Joe Streeter | Before he met Marge, Carlos was a Franciscan monk at the Santa Barbara Mission, but family needs required him to seek and receive a dispensation of his vows from Pope Paul XI. | And, soon the first grandchild arrives... | Helen & Marge | Page 13 | Doris

14: 1940s | Late 1940, Marge returns to MN with Joe and baby David...who are spoiled rotten by their youngest aunts (Cathy was the oldest at 16, and Pat was 11). | Ed's high school basketball team was undefeated for the '40/41 season. He later referred to this as his boyhood "claim to fame". | The Streeters make their home in Santa Barbara. Sadly, Carlos passes away October 20, 1940 (5 days before their 2nd anniversary), leaving Marge with 15 month old Joe, and 7 months pregnant with David. | The back of this picture says "Pretty good for a baby less than 7 months old" (presumably written by Marge about Joe) | Grandchild #2 David Streeter | March 18, 1941: Bernard enlists in the U.S. Army in San Francisco. He completed basic training for Field Artillery at Camp Roberts CA on June 21, 1941. As a civilian, he'd been part of the construction crew for the camp. | R.I.P. Carlos 1940 | Page 14

15: Pat, Yvonne, Mary, Cathy & baby David. In her life's story, Mary wrote she was quite the tomboy..notice she is the only one wearing overalls. | Ed & Cathy graduate in 1942. | In December, 1942 Staff Sgt. Kohn returns to the farm for a visit with his parents, younger siblings & nephews. Helen & Doris are now in Vallejo helping the war effort at Mare Island Shipyards, but everyone else is in MN. Back row: Yvonne, Bernard, G'ma, Ed & Marge Front: G'pa holding David, Joe, Pat, Cathy & Mary | The first picture we have of the Kohn bros. | Page 15

16: In May 1943 Bernard completes Officer Candidate's School and returns home as a 2nd Lieutenant before departing to his base at Adak, Alaska. | The older girls have an active social life with the many soldiers & sailors on base...soon Doris & Curt become a "couple". | Mary, Pat & Cathy | Page 17 | Ed visits the new home in Vallejo... Helen, Doris, G'pa, Mary, G'ma, Yvonne & Marge. Pat, "soldier Joe", Ed, "sailor David" & Cathy | Even the little boys help out at home

17: David, Marge & Joe | In 1942, Marge, Joe & David join Helen & Doris in Vallejo at the Mare Island Shipyards. Jobs were plentiful there...WWII was in full swing. Jobs were not as plentiful in MN, and soon, Charles paid $10 for a car ride cross country with a doctor and joined his daughters working at Mare Island. His first week's wage was more than an entire month's pay in MN. CA was the land of opportunity in his eyes forever more. June 1943, Katie, Cathy, Yvonne, Mary & Pat and 3 other young women from Ellsworth followed by train to reunite the family in Vallejo. Mary, Pat & Yvonne (the youngest) were still in school, and the other girls found jobs at Mare Island. Charles & Marge were pipe fitters, Helen was an electrician, Marge an engraver and Cathy a secretary. 7 sisters and 3 friends (all beautiful young women), their parents and two little boys live in a small 3 bedroom, 1 bath home at 116 Clay St. which became a home away from home for many soldiers & sailors. | Ed was drafted into the Navy in Ellsworth in August 1943. His basic training was done in ID, and then he was sent to San Diego for torpedoman training. He was sent overseas in 1944 and served on PT-377 in the South Pacific. He returned in June of 1945. | Charles is off to work! | Ed "at sea" | Two of the "other 3" residents of 116 Clay St. pose with Cathy & David. On the left is Rosalia "Zatzy" Mauch, sister of Bernard's future wife. | Schoolgirls Mary, Pat & Yvonne | Helen, G'ma & Marge | Page 16

Neither Bernard or Ed were home at the time. | Yvonne attends her Senior Party and is the first Kohn to graduate from high school in CA in 1944. | Doris, Marge, Joe & David pose with Marion Witt (another of the "other 3" residents) of 116 Clay St. Vallejo | Page 18

19: The Kohn Sisterhood | Grandchild #3 Dan Thulin | Bernard & Eleanor Mauch October 30, 1945 | Bernard & Eleanor married in her hometown (Adrian MN). The only Kohn family member still in MN (and therefore able to attend the wedding) was Agnes Kohn, Charles' sister. The newlyweds left on a car and bus honeymoon trip to visit his family in CA. | Grandchild #4 Terry Talbot | Pat | Yvonne, Mary, Pat & Cathy | AN ASIDE: Eleanor's uncle (Fred Mauch) married Bernard's aunt (Margaret Kohn) six weeks before Charles & Katie in 1914. | Page 19 | Cathy | David, G'ma & Joe

20: Grandchild #5 Lori Thulin | As the war ends, Helen and Marge have returned to live in Santa Barbara and are joined by G'pa, G'ma, Mary & Pat, where G'pa begins working for the University of California at Santa Barbara and the two girls finish high school. Doris & Curt start their family and remain in Vallejo. Ed is still in the Navy. Yvonne gets a job with the FBI and moves to San Francisco with Cathy who works as a secretary at the phone company. On his honeymoon, Bernard is hired by PG&E in San Francisco. He & Eleanor buy a house there and invite Cathy & Yvonne to stay with them. | Mary graduates in 1946 | G'pa & G'ma at their house on Salinas Street in Santa Barbara. | Mary | Joe, David & Marge | Doris, Dan & Curt | Cathy & Yvonne in San Francisco | Yvonne | Page 20 | Frank Nelson (G'ma's brother) & a couple of his pals made yearly visits to Katie and her family to escape the cold winters in MN. 41: Charles & Katie's Renewal of Vows and 50th Anniversary Party June 20, 1964 in Santa Barbara at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Parish Hall | “Four of the grandchildren served as Mass servers, Dicky Barri, Charley (sic) Maurer, Stevie Kohn, and Bobby McCarty. Three grandchildren, Danny Thulin, Joseph Streeter, David Streeter, and a nephew, John Kohn, acted as ushers.” "Several of the granddaughters acted as hostesses for the reception. These included Terry Talbot, Donna Kohn, Lorrie Thulin, Connie Maurer, Pam Maurer and Joan Kohn. They all looked lovely in their white dresses with beautiful gold satin aprons." | All of Charles & Katie's family attended. Total family head count was 56! Their children and spouses, grandchildren and 3 gr grandchildren. With other invited guests, more than 200 people attended the celebration. | Text in quotes are from a June 29, 1964 letter written by Mary to all guests. | Page 41

42: Excerpts from a letter dated June 29, 1964 Mary Anne wrote to all the 50th anniversary celebration guests. "Mother and dad had a most beautiful day. They were married 50 years ago in St. Mary's Church, Ellsworth, Minnesota on June 17, 1914. On June 20th they were honored by a special High Mass at their parish church. At the Mass they renewed their wedding vows." | "Several of the grandchildren went together to make a Spirltual Bouquet for their grandparents. It was just lovely and each child signed it. Some of the signatures are just darllng as the children were just learning to write". | "The Pastor, Father Matthew Kelly, arrived on the altar and although just a few of the family could be ushered to their seats, dad who is always in a hurry, filed down the aisle before several of the sons and daughters and their families could be seated. Father Kelly had mother and dad go up into the Sanctuary just as they do at the marriage ceremonies today." | "I could hardly keep from crying when I heard my parents repeat their vows. My three girls were so pleased and thought that both grandma and grandpa looked so cute up on the altar. After the Mass was over, Father Kelly turned and visited with mother and dad and gave them a special blessing from Pope Paul VI. As I walked down the aisle after mother and dad, I noticed many a tear in the eyes of those attending." | "Ike McDonald, a friend of Danny Thulin's at college, offered to sing several fitting songs for the occasion. Ike is a professional singer and sings on a TV station in San Francisco. His selection of songs were appropriate: Because, Whole World In His Hands, Till There Was You, and a Medley of 1914 tunes: Anniversary Song, When You Wore a Tulip, They Didn't Believe Me, You Made Me Love You, K-K-K-Katie, Charlie My Boy, Through The Years, and The Lord's Prayer. I wish you could have seen dad's face, especially when they sang Charlie My Boy. He really did enjoy it. Of course, he planted a kiss on Katie's cheek and you people that know mother can imagine how embarrassed she got. Eddie Kohn acted as master of ceremonies and there were three short talks. Bernard Kohn represented the children; Dick Barri represented the sons and daughter-in-laws; Joseph Streeter represented the grandchildren." | At the motel "... amount of exuberance and it took us about 5 minutes after arrival to be told that one of the guests had complained about the noise. After a few bitter complaints from that same guest, the management requested the complaining party leave." | "All in all, there were about 101 relatives present for the Anniversary Mass and reception. Most of these stayed at the same motel, The Sea Captain, overnight." | Page 42
