FC: Echo's Flower

One day a little girl named Sofia was picking flowers in the meadow in the woods by her house. Sofia loved the meadow, and she wanted some more flowers before winter came and snow covered the ground.

Sofia turned to go home, happy with the flowers she held, and she nearly ran into the figure that was blocking her way to the trail that lead straight to her backyard. “Hello there,” the strange girl said with a voice of honey. “I love those flowers in your hands, they look wonderful! ” The stranger seemed nice to the little girl, but Sofia promptly noticed that the older girl's skin was bright green.

Sofia tried to back away from the green girl as she mumbled something about her mom not wanting her to talk to strangers and her having to be home for dinner. The curious girl noticed Sofia's attempt to get away from her and reacted instantly.

“No! Please don't be scared! I won't hurt you." the strange girl begged, "I need your help. I need you to get this to my friend Echo, down by the reflecting pond.” The girl pulled out an object covered by a cloth, but Sofia could see the planting pot that peaked out from the under the cover. “ You see, I am a forest Nymph, and this plant is for my friend, Echo, it will finally give her back her voice.” Sofia stopped at the mention of the plant with healing power, for she loved flowers and wanted to see it. The nymph saw the little girl's hungry eyes and warned the child that the flower was not to be seen by anyone until it was in the hands of Echo, otherwise it would loose the healing powers it held.

Out of curiosity and a random sense of adventure Sofia accepted the challenge, gave a little nod and reached out for the flower. The nymph smiled then reminded Sofia not to look at the flower, or to give it to anyone other than her friend Echo. After the warnings Sofia was off to the pond deep in the woods. Sofia stumbled along, not truly knowing if there was a trail that lead to the hidden pond. The flower was leaning towards the deep woods and Sofia headed in that direction; figuring that the flower was leaning towards Echo because thats who needed that healing power. She couldn't help but smile at first, she was holding a magical flower! It reminded her of the stories her mom told, only this was real.

Sofia was well on her way to the pond deep in the woods when she noticed something strange. As Sofia walked further into the forest, she noticed that the rare flower gave off a scent that was like no other.

The flower gave off a scent that Sofia could only describe as goodness. The voice in her head told her not to, but she had the need to look at the flower, as if the fragrance was calling to her. Sofia watched in both horror and pure curiosity as her hand crept up the cloth that covered the plant and with a mind of it's own began to slowly peel the covering away. Luckily, because the girl was not longer watching where she was walking she stumbled on a root, which caused her to put all her concentration in to staying up right, so the plant stayed under it's curtain.

Sofia walked for quite some time before finding the pond. There was a figure next to the pond, that the girl thought must be Echo. As Sofia got closer to the pond her hopes began to die, for the person was no nymph. The figure next to the pond was a man with old age showing through the wrinkles in his pale skin. He was staring at the pond in an admiring way and did not even bother to look up and see what was approaching. Sofia slowed down and edged closer to the pond, afraid to bother the old man. When she was just about at the shore Sofia found the man was not alone.

There was numerous nymphs, like the one from the meadow, waiting around the pond or staring at the reflection. They all seemed to be bored as they just sat around, like they did not have anything else to do.

A nymph with the same green skin as all the others, and hair the color of the falling leaves, spotted Sofia. Soon enough, nymphs surrounded Sofia out of curiosity; all the girls were looking at her as if she were an alien.

“ I’m looking for Echo” Sofia said in a small voice, but the response she got was astounding. At once the nymphs were jumping up and down yelling that they were Echo and eying what Sofia was holding.

These girls did not seem to be as nice as the nymph from the meadow. Sofia wanted to give the flower to Echo and get away from the pound, but that seemed to be impossible with all of them claiming to be Echo. Panic began to fill Sofia; what would she do? | Sofia did not want to give the flower to the wrong person because then the powers it had would go to waste, along with her efforts to make it to the pound. She tried to think but no solutions came to mind, and now she was stuck in the middle of a group of greedy nymphs. Nervous butterflies swarmed in Sofia's stomach, she had to think up a plan reveal the real Echo, and she had to think it up quick.

Sofia remembered when she was younger she would go around the house copying whatever her mother said, her mother called Sofia her echo. Then up at the meadow the nice nymph told her the healing flower was to help restore Echo's voice. | An idea struck Sofia, so this time she asked the nymphs around her “Please answer one at a time; which one of you is Echo?”

The nymphs went in a circle and each one simply said “I am Echo”, that is all except one of the nymphs, who only gestured to herself and half heartedly said “Echo”. Sofia had one more question which she said with more confidence “What are your names?” This time the girls looked slightly annoyed as they repeated once again that they were Echo. Sofia watched all the girls closely so when the circle came around to the last girl Sofia saw the girl was miserable as she tried to say something and no sound came from her mouth.

The plan plan had worked! Sofia walked up to the unusual girl, the one that could only say words that had already been said through Sofia's questions. “Your Echo, right?” Sofia asked, she saw the girl's expression go from miserable to ecstatic as the nymph nodded. Sofia placed the plant in the nymph's hand and watched as the plant under the cloth started to glow. The light moved to flow up Echo's arms, and soon Echo was glowing as well. When the light dimmed down Echo looked no different, but the flower was no longer covered. Sofia gaped at the flower, which was lovely, delicate and seemed to send out an aura of power.

Echo thanked Sofia and told her that the flower had lifted her curse, a curse that made it so she could only repeated words that had already been said. Echo also told Sofia to come and visit whenever she could. The nymph even let Sofia keep the flower because she no longer needed it's healing power. | Now that Sofia had the flower in her own hands she found that the appearance shifted from one beautiful flower to the next. It was like the flower did not want its viewers to get bored as they glanced at it. Sofia absolutely loved the mystical flower.

After saying farewell, Sofia ran all the way back to the meadow and told everything to the nymph that had given her the mission. The nymph hugged Sofia and told her that she had done a great deed for her dear friend. The nymph also said that Sofia could come back to the meadow any time of year and there would always be at least one flower in bloom just for her.

When Sofia got home, just in time for dinner, she set the prize flower in the center of the foyer. Even though life carried on the same as always, Sofia always smiled whenever she passed her flower. No one else may know of her adventure, but that did not matter to the little girl because she had gained a magic flower and two new friends. The End.
