4: When he was 18 years old he drove a team from Ohio to Washington, Iowa for a Perry Pratt. His pay was his food and clothing. He returned to Ohio by train and in 1856 returned to Iowa with a team of his own, bringing his sister, Clarissa with him.

22: Roy enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in February 1941. Overseas, he was stationed at Hardwick Air Base in England and worked as a bombsight mechanic in the bombsight maintenance shop.
23: During his time in the European theater, he invented and made several instruments that aided in bombing runs, earning him a Bronze Star. He was noted for his achievements as an Automatic Flight Control Equipment Specialist.
