S: Rocky, The Boy with the Hole in his Middle R. K. Roberson
BC: © 2011 by R.K. Roberson | Rocky is a simple story about a little boy that one day found himself with a hole right in the middle of his chest. While the story is at first glimpse a story for children, in reality it is neither and both. It may affect you and be something you want to share with someone else. Do that, especially when you or they find they have a hole right in the middle, where your heart should be. One little note: A friend of mine once read this story and commented, “The pictures look like a little boy drew them.” Exactly.
FC: Rocky The Boy with the Hole in his Middle | R. K. Roberson
If you look closely, you'll see that he has a hole right in his middle. Most people can't see the hole in Rocky's middle, except for some very close friends and his family. This is the story of how Rocky got his hole. | This is Rocky
Before Rocky had his hole he lived with his family in a little gray house with a chimney, a big green lawn and a cherry tree with very yummy cherries.
Rocky had a dog named Kipper. Rocky and Kipper liked to wrestle and chase in the big green lawn. Rocky loved Kipper.
Rocky had two brothers. Together, the three of them spent many happy days swimming and riding bikes. Even though they sometimes argued (the way brothers do), Rocky loved his two brothers.
Rocky had a mother. He thought she was the most beautiful person in the whole world. She read to him and let him help her in the kitchen. Rocky loved his mother.
Rocky had a father. He though he was the strongest, bravest person in the whole world. He worked very hard, but he still took the time to show Rocky how to catch fish and play baseball. Rocky loved his father; he was Rocky's best friend.
One night Rocky's father got sick. An ambulance came and took Rocky's father to the hospital. Rocky watched the flashing red lights disappear around the bend in the road.
The doctors tried and tried to fix Rocky's father. But finally, Rocky's father died. Rocky sat down under the cherry tree and cried. He cried for a long time.
When Rocky got up he felt empty inside. Although he couldn't see anything wrong, he could tell there was a hole where his heart used to be. It didn't hurt the way normal hurts do; it hurt in a way that Rocky had never felt before. He thought, "I must have cried my heart away."
Rocky decided to take a walk and look for something to fill the hole. He came upon Kipper first. Kipper jumped up on him and licked his face. Kipper made Rocky smile for the first time since his father died.
Kipper joined Rocky and they continued their walk.
They came upon Rocky's mother and brothers. They too had been very sad. Rocky gave his brothers and his mother a big hug and held them for a very long time. This made Rocky feel a little less lonely.
Rocky's mother and brothers joined Kipper and Rocky and they continued their walk.
They came upon a boy. Rocky stopped to talk to the boy. They played games, told stories and did many wonderful things together. The boy and Rocky soon became the best of friends. Rocky's friend joined Kipper, his mother and brothers and Rocky and they continued their walk.
Time passed and the little group continued their walk up and down hills...
...in sun and rain... ...and through sad and glad.
They came upon a young woman. Rocky stopped to talk to the young woman. They spent much time together and held hands. Rocky asked the young woman to walk with him. The young woman joined Kipper, Rocky's mother and brothers, Rocky's friend and Rocky and they continued their walk.
After a little while they came upon a baby girl. Rocky and the young woman fell in love with the baby girl. They asked her to be their very own. The baby girl joined Kipper, Rocky's mother and brothers, Rocky's friend, the young woman and Rocky and they continued their walk.
Not far down the road they came upon a baby boy. And like the baby girl, Rocky and the young woman fell in love with the baby boy. They asked the baby boy to be their very own. The baby boy joined Kipper, Rocky's mother and brothers, Rocky's friend, the young woman, the little girl and Rocky and they continued their walk.
Just around the next turn they came upon another baby boy! This surprised the little group, especially Rocky and the young woman. But the baby boy smiled at them and, just like the little girl and the little boy, they fell in love with him. They asked the baby boy to be their very own. The baby boy joined Kipper, Rocky's mother and brothers, Rocky's friend, the young woman, the little girl, the little boy and Rocky and they continued their walk.
And one day they came upon a home with a chimney. They put a green lawn around it and planted a cherry tree. Rocky and the young woman cleaned the home and made it warm.
One day Rocky was cleaning the basement and came across an old bat, ball and glove, and a fishing pole. When he picked them up his hole, which had become quite small, began to grow again, his heart hurt and tears came into his eyes.
He started to throw them away so his hole would become smaller, but the little girl, the little boy and the baby boy asked him what they were.
Rocky dusted off the old bat, ball and glove. He showed the little girl, the little boy and the baby boy how to play with them. They had a wonderful time playing on the green lawn.
Rocky cleaned the fishing rod and took the little girl, little boy and baby boy fishing. They didn't catch any fish, so lay on the river bank watching clouds float by. Rocky's heart stopped hurting and his tears went away. And the hole became small again.
To this day there are times when Rocky sits under the cherry tree alone and thinks of his dad. His heart hurts, tears come and his hole gets bigger. Then, Rocky remembers his walk with Kipper, his mother and brothers, his friend, the young woman, the little girl, the little boy and the baby boy. He takes the little girl, the little boy and the baby boy fishing and plays ball with them. And the hole becomes small again.
The hole never goes away, but because of Rocky's friends and family, it never gets as big as it was in the beginning.
