Thursday, July 12 After a short ferry ride from Seattle, we arrived on Whidbey Island. Ruth and Luisa filled the van with food for the week.
People quickly discovered... | ... the lighthouse, pool, beach.
Friday, July 13 All ages play an epic game of "Capture the Cones." Runners dash into enemy territory. | Prisoners await their release on one of the fort towers. To get free, they must catch a tennis ball thrown by a rescuer who must also avoid being tagged by the defenders.
There was plenty happening on the sidelines, of course...
 Al and Joan's 50th anniversary
The apple pie was good, but we ran out of apples (and pie!)
S'posin' S'posin' I should fall in love with you; Do you think that you could love me too? S'posin' I should hold you and caress you; Would it impress you or distress you? S'posin' I should say, "for you I yearn," Would you think I'm speaking out of turn? And S'posin' I'd declare it, would you take my love and share it? I'm not S'posin' I'm in love with you.

Grease and flour a frying pan (preferably iron, but a baking sheet will do). Place loaf inside pan and bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown. If done, loaf will sound hollow when tapped firmly on the bottom. If not, return to oven for 5-10 minutes more. Cool on rack. To serve, slice in half. Turn each half cut-side down, and slice vertically. Best served warm with butter. | May Gilchreest Ruddy's Irish Soda Bread (unofficial recipe of Doonaree 2007) 2 cups all-purpose or bread flour (closest to Irish flour) 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar (depends on taste) 1 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. baking powder 3/4 to 1 cup of dark raisins 1 1/2 tsp. caraway seeds, rubbed or crushed 1 egg 1 cup buttermilk 2 T butter, melted Preheat oven at 375-400 F. Sift together flour, sugar, salt, soda, and baking powder. Mix in raisins and caraway seeds. In separate bowl, beat egg lightly and add buttermilk and butter. Stir the egg/buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture just long enough to moisten. Add a little flour if too sticky. Turn onto a floured board and knead very lightly with your hands, and shape into a round loaf. With a very sharp knife, cut a cross on top.
