BC: The End
FC: Things Fall Apart By: Chinua Achebe
Chapter One 'He had no patience for unsuccessful men/ He had no patience for his father' (2). Unoka, Okonkwo's father, was an agbala, or a failure. He wasn't respected and could barely support his family; Unoka preferred to play his music instead.
WORLD Connection Unoka resembles the everyday musician. He is trying to make a living for his family but can't. Just like pre-discovery eminem.
Chapter Two Mbaino killed one off Umuofia's women in the market and now they have to pay them back or go to war. | World Connection: The ultimatum is just like when the US gave Japan an Umtimatum to surrender or be bombed.
'''Umuofia Kwenu,' he bellowed a fifth time, and the crod yelled in answer. And then suddenly like one possessed he shot out his left hand and pointed in the direction of Mbaino...''
Chapter three | World Connection The best modern day comparison to the impact the drought had on Okonkwo and is the the Dust Bowl
''He... prayed that the rain might fall every night. But the drought continued for eight market weeks (19).'' OK is remembering the drought from when he borrowed seeds
4 | ''In his anger he had forgotten that it was the week of peace...'' (25). OK beat his wife duringthe week of peace, because he wasn't a man who stopped beating someone halfway through.
World Connection: Mel Gibson beat his wife despite the consequences.
''...Okonkwo, who had been walking about aimlessly in this compound in suppressed anger, suddenly found an outlet'' (33).
5 | Okonkwo was getting anxious for the upcoming party, and he let out his anger by beating Ekwifi and shooting at her. | World COnnection WHen a person gets a little anxious about a Christmas Party, they might snap at their loved ones to release tension
^ 6 | World COnnection If a girl goes to her favorite event, and the best player catches her eye, then how she feels at every event after would have the same effect.
" The last match was... among the best wrestlers in all of the nine villages" (43). There is a big wrestling match going on and Ekwefi is watching it with enjoyment. She enjoys watchingthe matches because they remind her of when she first saw Okonkwo win her favorite sport, wrestling.
"''Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down'' ()."They were killing Ikemefuna and Okonwo participated despite being told not to. | SOmetimes I've made fun of peopls I liked, because people that I wanted to have a good image with thought they wre weird. WORLD CONNECTION
''...the suitor's father cleared his voice and announced the object of his visit'' (63). They were discussing bride price for Obierika's daughter, there was conversation about White men at this meeting.... World Connection Modern day dowries equal bride price.
World Connection my sister falls ill often, to the point of hospitalization. When ever she gets sick we ''spring'' to action.
''Enzima struggled to escape from the choking and overpowering steam... when the mat was at last removed she was drenched with perspiration'' (76). | Enzima is constantly sick and they've had a lot of children die, so whenever she falls ill they get very worried and move quickly to heal her.
''Evil Forest then turned to the other group and addressed the eldest of the three brothers'' (80). A trial is being held to decide what to do about a situation. Evil Forest is the leader of the Egwugwu, who are deciding the trial. This clearly demonstrates the villages justice system which becomes important later on in the book. World Connection Umuofia's trial= civil court
World Connection When the cops come to interview your daughter... you'd be nervous too....
11 | "At the mention of Enzima's name Ekwefi jerked her head sharply like an animal that had sniffed death in the air'' (88). Agbala has come to take Enzima to The Caves, and Ekwefi followed. Enzima had been sick a lot in her past, s the Agbala 's visit greatly worried her and Okonkwo.
"...Okonkwo's friend, Obierika, was celebrating his daughter's Uri" (97). During this ceremony the suitor brings palm oil to the family, and the Bride is the central figure. THis is a very important social event.
World Connection An uri is the same thing as a bridal shower.
'' Violent deaths were frequent, but nothing like this had ever happened'' (109). Okonkwo's gun misfired and accidentally killed a boy, for his punishment he is exiled for 7 years, this is also when things begin to fall apart.
World Connection Involuntary manslaughter = Okonwko's punishment
