FC: The Smiths in Winston-Salem By: Kaylee Berstler

This project is dedicated to Mrs. Holtry

The Smiths are a nuclear family in the parenting stage. John, 37, is a surgeon earning $187,200. Alexis, 35, is a psychiatrist earning $173,300. Their combined annual income $360,530. There are three children, Jace, 16, Ava, 15, and Layla, seven.

John values safety, his home has a gated backyard and a security system. Alexis values cleanliness and organization, there are shelves and other things like that to make sure everything in the home has a spot to be in. All three kids value social, so there is a pool and hot tub in the backyard, along with a patio. Jace values comfort, there is a spacious living room with comfortable furniture. Ava values peace; there is a study room where anyone can go to be alone. Layla values originality, so she got to decide the way she wanted her room to be painted and decorated.

Jace has football after school and Ava has field hockey. On the days that they don't, they are allowed to go home without an adult being there. Every day after school, Layla goes to an after school program until John, Alexis, or Jace can pick her up.

The Smith family can afford a home that is 7,511 square feet, but they decided to save money for other things, like vacations and college money for the kids. The style of their home is going to be New American. This type of home is usually big and the neighborhood that the Smiths are living in contains homes that are very large.

Four things the house will have for energy efficiency is argon-filled double-paned window and one that is furnished with Low-E glass and aluminum frame work, a refrigerator that monitors how long the fridge has been open, a washer and dryer with sensors, and have a purifier on the sink.

The home will have four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and one half bathroom. The living room is very comfortable; quite large with very cozy furniture. The kitchen is spacious; it has an island with chairs, a kitchen table, cabinets, and still has a lot of space to move around and not feel cluttered.

The outside of the home is very inviting; it has certain things, like flowers coming up the driveway, and it just catches your attention, making you want to go see the inside. The home overall is impressive; it has a lot of things that would impress most people when they saw them.

The Smith family will reside in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 27106. The average low temperature in January is 27 degrees and the average high temperature for July is 88 degrees. The average annual precipitation is 46 inches. The air pollution index is the highest risk with 94 out of 100.

Around this zip code, there is Clinard Lake and it is mostly grassland, but has some trees and shrubs. Winston-Salem is an urban town and has a person crime risk of 200 and property crime risk of 244 which is double the national average of 100. As a surgeon and psychiatrist, the Smith parents picked a location that is a pretty big city, so they have plenty of opportunities to find work. There are many facilities in the community, but some are Sherwood Plaza Shopping Center, Reynolda Gardens, Minorcas Creek Par 3 Golf Course, and Bethabara Church.

I chose Jefferson Elementary School with test scores of 78% in math and 81% in reading, Hanes Middle School with test scores of 67% in math and 73% in reading, and West Forsyth High School with test scores of 56% in math, 64% in reading, 59% in science, and 90% in writing. | All the schools I chose for the children to go to either got a nine out of ten or ten out of ten on the GreatSchools rating.

The lot is 1/2 to 1 acre and is flat. It has two white oak and one flowering dogwood trees in the backyard, a few shrubs on the side of the home and also in the front, flowers planted along the driveway, and a lot of grassy land. | Matthias Ripp Grassland

Based on the gross household income of $360,530, the family can afford a home that costs $901,325. They save $180,265 for the down-payment on the home. To finance the remainder of the home's cost, they borrow $721,060 from a lender at 4%. | The loan is secured by using the home as collateral. Because the loan is a conventional, fixed rate mortgage, the payments will stay the same for 30 years. The monthly payment is $3,442.45. Over the 30 years, they will pay back $1,239,282. The total principal paid back is $721,060 and the total interest is $518,222. An estimate of the property taxes and home insurance is $18,026.50 per year.

The Quiet Area | The quiet area is the bedroom. It has an analogous color harmony as a color scheme and it gives off a positive mood. The walls will be peach to make the room appear larger.

The Work Area | The work area is the kitchen. It has a triad color scheme and creates an energized mood. The walls are off white to make the kitchen appear more spacious and to help everything else in the kitchen stand out.

The Social Area | The social area is the living room. It also has a triad color scheme and creates a happy mood. The colors are very vibrant so that everyone feels talkative and alert while in the room. The walls are a light yellow to make the room appear larger.
