FC: The Dark Side of the Moon

Influencing millions of fans all across the world | Taking people to new levels of psychedelic bliss

Pink Floyd was the product of the mid-sixties psychedelic era of Brittish rock. Then the foundation of what would become one of the most influential rock bands of all time would be layed. With a truly unique style of play and their mastery of electronic instruments the band would set themselves apart from any other rock group in the world

Members: Roger Waters David Gilmour Nick Mason Richard Wright

 Pink Floyd The Background

"Pink Floyd are an English rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows. One of rock music's most successful acts, the group have sold over 200 million albums worldwide including 74.5 million albums in the United States alone." -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd

"Pink Floyd had moderate mainstream success and were one of the most popular bands in the London underground music scene in the late 1960s as a psychedelic band led by Syd Barrett; however, Barrett's erratic behaviour eventually forced his colleagues to replace him with guitarist and singer David Gilmour. After Barrett's departure, singer and bass player Roger Waters gradually became the dominant and driving force in the mid-1970s, until his eventual departure from the group in 1985." -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd

"The band recorded several albums, achieving worldwide success with The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979). In 1985, Waters declared Pink Floyd defunct, but the remaining members, led by Gilmour, continued recording and touring as Pink Floyd. Although they were sued by Waters for rights to the name, they enjoyed commercial success with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). Eventually they reached a settlement with Waters allowing them use of the name." -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd

"I think every album was a step towards Dark Side of the Moon," keyboardist Rick Wright said. "We were learning all the time, the techniques of the recording and our writing was getting better." As a culmination of their inner-space explorations of the early 1970s, the Floyd toured the bulk of Dark Side in Britain for months prior to recording. But in the studio, the band articulated bassist Roger Waters' lyric reveries on the madness of everyday life with melodic precision ("Breathe," "Us and Them") and cinematic lustre (Clare Torry's guest vocal aria "The Great Gig in the Sky"). Dark Side is one of the best-produced rock albums ever, and "Money" may be rock's only Top Twenty hit in 7/8 time." http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/6598274/43_the_dark_side_of_the_moon

May 05, 2006, Ray Waddell "This week, Pink Floyd's landmark album "Dark Side of the Moon" notches a significant milestone: 1,500 weeks on the Billboard charts" (The Billboard 200 and Top Pop Catalog Albums). "I think the answer is twofold. Musically, this thing has really stood the test of time. There was something about the symbiosis of the musical talents of the four of us that worked really well." -Rodger Waters

"But also, I think, in terms of the lyrical content, philosophically it holds an appeal to each successive generation because it feels like it gives you permission to question things, maybe, which is something that is very appealing to us as we hit puberty and drift beyond it into real life. Musically, the record expresses the concerns that there are in the lyric about basic fundamental questions about human existence." -Rodger Waters

Personal testimonial: I have always heard of PinK Floyd through out growing up. I hear them on the radio most frequently but never had I heard an entire album of theirs in its entirity. Always being jolly towards Pink Floyd I was excited when I figuerd out which album to choose for this project. I did this album justice. I borrowed my fathers BOSE headphones, turned the lights down low, and completly mellowed out to the journey that is Dark side of the Moon. Like reading a great book I soon found myself getting lost in the music. Drifting off into a state of imagination and complete relaxation. I absolutly loved the build ups, the let downs, the sounds. Wave after wave of euphoric, almost trippy sensations added to my enjoyment. One of the best parts of listening to this album is the fact that each track leads into the next. It is almost like Dark Side was one continues song. Absolutly brilliant. i am almost disapointed that it is not in the top fifteen greatest albums of all time. But number 43 will have to do.

For over 30 years Dark side of the Moon has been a part of music culture. Looking at some of the merchendise you can tell it will continue to do so forever.
