1: We are Team 597 from Foshay Learning Center located in South Los Angeles. Since 2001, our team has set out to change the way our culture perceives STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers. | Welcome to the 597 Family

3: Mission Statement | Our Mission is to encourage, motivate, and inspire young men and women through the use of robotics to pursue their interests in the STEM fields. We foster a positive, humanistic and multicultural experience that cultivates teamwork, responsibility and commitment to all stakeholders involved. | We Build More Than Robots... | We Build Character!
4: Every Monday afternoon we host the California “Mission Science” Program. Our team members use a hands-on set curriculum to teach lessons, and perform scientific experiments with elementary and middle school students. | 6 yrs. of students teaching students | Mission Science
5: FIRST Lego League | Team 597 offers workshops to teachers who needed assistance in teaching LEGO Robotics to middle school kids. | In 2015 Foshay Robotics Team 597 sponsored and mentored 8 FIRST LEGO League Teams (FLL) for the “Trash Trek” Challenge. | Since 2007 over 500 students have gone through our FLL Program!
6: A reading program sponsored by the Los Angeles Clippers that promotes importance of being literate. | Elementary and Middle School students are engaged in a variety of workshops taught by our team members. | I Can Read!
7: Computers for Youth | Every 6th grader who enters Foshay will receive a free desktop computer courtesy of the partnership established between CFY and Team 597. | In order to motivate parents to take part in their child's education, the team assisted with workshops on how to use a computer.
8: The SoI (Summer of Innovation) pilot, a NASA initiative as part of the "Educate to Innovate" campaign, has contracted Paragon TEC to engage thousands of middle school teachers and students by providing intensive, stimulating mathematics and science based experiences during the summers of 2010 - 2012 over 1,500 kids participated in SoI | NASA SoI is designed to improve STEM teaching and learning
9: Members of Team 597 put in over 100 hours of volunteer service planning, organizing, and distributing various materials and supplies to Lead Educators and classrooms. | The Foshay NASA SoI Program was honored by local and national VIPs and received local media coverage from several news stations.
10: Gobble Gobble Give | Every Thanksgiving morning, team members join Gobble Gobble Give, an organization that comes together to prepare and deliver food for the homeless. | We helped serve over 16,000 meals
11: Toy Give Away & Christmas Charoling | This is an annual program that Team 597 members participate during the November/December time frame. Team members help organize,disseminate books & toys and carol to needy families during the Holiday season at a local Mall.
12: Breast Cancer and Bone Marrow Awareness | After realizing the struggles of two of our most wonderful of sponsors with breast cancer and bone marrow transplant, it became part of our goal to spread the word of getting tested and donating in order to save lives. | Wearing our pink ribbon!
13: Blood Drive | Team 597 members help organize and participate in our school’s Semi-Annual Blood Drive. Team members promote the blood drive by making flyers, and finding blood donors. Team 597 has participated in the school’s blood drive cause for the last eight years. | Courage
14: I Robotics Day! | Showing our love for Robotics!
15: Reaching Beyond Our Borders | Foshay Learning Center has embarked on transforming from a U.S. Centric Educational Urban Learning Center to a Globally Minded Institute of Higher Learning. Specifically Foshay has: implemented an International art program that requires students to come together and create a budget model in order to fund their initiatives, Room 13; Robotics Program; created a High School Global Youth Ambassadors organization to teach elementary students about Global Citizenship
16: 9-1-1 For Kids | 9-1-1 for Kids is a fun program taught to children by our team members. Student team members engage and educate adolescent youth on when & how to call 911.
17: Science of Sports | A series of sports workshops designed for elementary and middle school students and their parents to take the mystery of science. | Topics covered included the science of analyzing different sports balls, different types of sport clothing, golf clubs, tennis rackets, and baseball bats.
18: Banking on your Future | A program that stresses financial literacy among high school and middle school students. The LA Financial Credit Union is the primary presenting sponsor of this program. | . Team 597 student members help with the workshops and also participate in the lessons
19: National Robotics Week | This is how we celebrate National Robotics Week, by planning a community event with the California Science Center and corporate partners.
20: Family Fly Day | Family members and students build and test their very own gliders and rockets. | Students and Family members learn about the forces on an airplane, aspect ratio, how to calculate the Reynolds number, and much more. Team members also provide Spanish translation for those individuals who needed this service.
21: Say No to Drugs and AIDS Walk | To raise awareness we volunteer around our community in events such as Say No to Drugs and AIDs walk.
22: Going Green! | Since 2003 the team collects and packages up these items monthly and sends them to a Non-Profit organization that properly disposes or recycles the cell phone and the ink cartridges. | Recycling old cell phones and used printer ink cartridges has become a tradition with Team 597.
23: Since 2005 our team has dedicated several afternoons to tutoring high school and middle school students in math and various subjects. | Tutoring | A+
24: Team members donated their time at the annual South Los Angeles Job Fair. | Job Fair | We helped people file job applications online and use computers. | Lending a helping hand in this tough economy
25: Robot Demonstrations | In order to demonstrate who we are and what we do, our team does 15 to 20 robot demonstrations each year. These robot demonstrations allow us not only to spread the FIRST message but also bring in potential sponsors.
26: MESA | MESA is a program that serves educationally disadvantaged students and, to the extent possible by law, emphasizes participation by students from groups with low rates of eligibility for four-year colleges. Every year, team members participate in this program.
27: Water for the Children of Africa | Members of team 597 are involved in project "Water for Children of Africa." The team has attended conferences in San Diego and hopes in the near future to travel to Africa to bring school supplies such as pencils, paper and notebooks to needy children and also help with digging water wells.
28: CONGRESSIONAL CAUCUS | Congresswoman Diane Watson invites our team to be exhibitors and presenters at the Congressional Robotics Caucus luncheon briefing in Washington, DC where our college mentor, Karla Salinas spoke about her experience with FIRST.
29: On October 13th representatives from Foshay Robotics Team 597 traveled from Los Angeles to Washington DC. The team was one of several exhibitors at the Congressional Robotics Caucus briefing held on Capitol Hill Thursday, October 15th 2009. | That’s right, our very own Team 597, Karla Salinas, spoke to the Congressional Robotic Caucus members, NASA officials, and important members of industry about how FIRST can INSPIRE students to set goals and reach new height they never thought. | Christyl C. Johnson, Executive Director of the National Science and Technology Council

34: Raytheon Engineering Challenge | We are proud to say that we have placed several times at the engineering games. | Every year, Team 597 attends the annual Raytheon engineering challenge. | Team members working together.
35: Mentoring | Every year, our team has more and more graduating students coming back as mentors. and role models. | 597 has established a legacy of mentors who are passionate about continuing the 597 saga.
36: Team 597 members now participate in SkillsUSA Technical challenges that include Robotics, Engineering, and Technology
37: We are Showing How Awesome a Robotic Education is by mentoring more than 60 middle school students in the 2015 SeaPerch ROV Challenge.
38: Safety | We are a very safety conscious team. Every team member is considered a safety captain, and is also CPR and AED certified.
39: USC Football Games | Spreading FIRST Message-Expose almost 90,000+ people to FIRST by our robot demos at each home game
40: Family Information Night | Parent support is extremely important and each year Team 597 host a Parent Information Night
41: LabView Workshop | Recently, Team 597 conducted a LabView Program work shop for 16 FRC Teams January 2012
42: Coordinated and hosted the SCRRF Fall Workshops, 2013 attended by 12 FRC Teams and about 100 people.

44: Team 597 participated in the 2014 & 2015 STEAM Expo at LATTC, we demonstrated robots and our 3d printer to over 50,000 people
45: We have established a K-12 PLTW Manufacturing, Robotics, & Engineering Academy which services over 200 high school, middle school, and elementary students. 46: KitBot Build Day | Continuing to host KitBot Build Days for local FRC in need of programming, electronics, and building assistance. We have helped 25 teams since 2015.
47: Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo is one the largest pop-culture event in America held during the fall at the Los Angeles Convention Center, located in downtown Los Angeles, California. With over 65,000 people had the opportunity to see our team's FIRST robot in action.

54: Proclamations | Team 597 has received various proclamations over the last 11 years. The Team has received Senatorial and Congressional proclamations. Other resolutions : the Governor of California, the Mayor of Los Angeles, LA County Board of Supervisors, NASA, NASA JPL, several institutions including USC, LAUSD School Board, Paragon Tech, State Assemblyman Mike Davis, and many others.
